  1. I want to buy a bike frame to build a decent road bike but I don't
have a $1000 to spend on a frame as the bicycle stores are quoting me.
Is there a shop on line the someone would know of that sells new or
used 3 or 4 pound frames for an affordable price?

  2. You would be MUCH better off buying a complete bike. Unless you can afford
the $1000-$2000 that it takes to buy a good frame these days, you can get
allot more bike buying it complete. Find an LBS that will work with you on
customizing a stock bike to make it more personal and to your licking. They
are out there, I know, I run one myself.

  4. Local Bicycle Shop

  5. Nashbar.com has some cheapie road frames in that weight. Don't know what
they are like, but they make your weight, price and location considerations.

  6. The Nashbar suggestion below is a good one. Also, check your local
Cannondale dealer to see if they have any old 2.8 or CAAD 3 frames
around - they might be willing to let one of these go cheap. They're
light and good performing (although the 2.8 is a bit harsh) frames.

Obviously you are on line. Search around. There are a lot of people out there
who want to sell you a frame.

Do consider whether building is your best deal. As others pointed out it is
rarely the least expensive option. Often it can be the least expensive way to
get something specific for you, but that doesn't seem to be the case here.

    Torelli Corsa Strada-$629
    Waterford Gunnar-$725
    Soma-$400
    Surly-$400

Sure some frames are expensive but not outrageous frames are out
    there...

There are some bike shops that will start with a grerat frame, after a
free fit, build it to your spec and it won't cost a bundle. Not all
LBS' buy complete bikes in boxes...I know I run one myself.

www.chucksbikes.com is a good place to look.

The OP should post his location. He might be near your shop.

  11. Why don't you look at Airborne.net? Their frames are great quality.

  12. I bought my Ti frame from Habanero cycles $695 for the road frame. I
then bought used and new parts, and some donated ones to build myself a
    pretty nice road bike.

  13. Barney,

As other posters have cautioned, its not always the cheapest route to
buy frame seperately and build. But... if you are going that route, I
would second www.gvhbikes.com --great people, and they also typically
have great prices on build kits, as well as frames.

I haven't dealt with www.habcycles.com but the owner is a regular
around here, and a member of my club recently bought one of their
famous $695 Ti road frames, and is quite fond of it.

    Good luck,
    Matt.
