Do you have to fail an IQ test to get a WebTV account?

I cruised through some old race times. A 16:58 I did in 1989 got me
43rd place in a very popular yet very local race (Long Island, NY).
43rd place in a 5k now is somewhere in the 19 minutes. And you can
count the 30 year old top ten finishers on two fingers. I don't mind
being a big fish even if the pond keeps getting smaller.BTW were you at After the Leaves on Sunday?

Yes, were you?? I was originally going to get high running the trail
slowly, enjoying the colorful leaves, lake Minnewaka and Awosting. I
ended up running with old high school friend. He was a year younger, 59
and out for a training run. I ended up running faster than I intended
as we swapped how our kids had done since the last time we talked some
many years back. I noticed we were picking off people on the initial
3-4 mile uphill. I just figured if I went out too fast I would slow down
later - it's only a 20k and not a crash and burn like my NYC marathon
buddies. 😉 Once we crested the hill we held a pretty good clip at least
for me around Awosting. As we passed people they would say I could hear
you guys for miles.I ended up running 1:36 I think. About 30 seconds slower than last
year. Anyway, I had a fun time on a spectacular course. Sliding into the
60-69 age got me first but this will be short lived as my rivals cross
the river Styx. How did you do?

On Sunday I ran 31:00 for a five-mile race to place 25th overall out
of 256 and went home just barely satisfied - it's quite a hilly course
- to find a message asking me to arrange collection of my third-place
prize in the North Wales championships for M40-45 age group.I was pleasantly surprised and also bit embarrassed... a very few
years ago that time would have put me no better than seventh or eighth
in M40-45, yet scrolling down the results I found I could have run
32:05 and *still* got third place.Nine of the 24 ahead of me were older than me.

as many fast people as always, but more races and more people racing.
That would make the time for 43rd place slower on average because the
faster people would be spread around more thinly.--Harold Buck

I once thought the same thing. However after a recent year of running a
number of local races and seeing many of the same faces in these races
realized that there are fewer of us fast folks. Teams that once send
ten runners now send a handful and there are fewer teams. The fact that there are more races disguises the dwindling numbers. All
of this is unscientific so I can wiggle out of any real research that
proves me wrong.Andy
