Wrong. Anecdotes in an anecdote based system are the perfect refutation since they are based on actual experience.
Of course, I expect that some of the alties wil claim that the anecdotes showing the quackery are made up.

I use herbs to control some minor conditions I have - chronic sinusitis (not infections, just inflammation) and some minor skin problems - but I know enough to know that I really can't treat myself for more serious conditions.
That is where most users of alternative medicine are, and herbs can very effectively treat a lot of minor (and a few major) ailments. We're worried about the ones that try to cure colon cancer with coffee enemas.

He was not my friend. He was a patient I took care of when I was a surgery resident.
And I honestly don't know if he lived. Residents only rotated on that particular general surgery service for three months, and this patient was only in the hospital for a week or so, long enough to have his operation and recover from it. I never saw him again after he was discharged, although I'm sure the attending surgeon saw him as an outpatient. No, what I have consistently said is that anecdotal evidence (i.e., individual cases) are the weakest form of medical evidence and unverifiable testimonials don't even qualify as medical evidence.
