  1. hey all!!!
i'm going to do 2 treks in the region:
    1. PN d'aiguestortes - from espot to viehla
    2. PN de ordesa y Mt. predido. from prazan to ordesa.

    i have a few questions:
    3. how do i get to ESpot from barcelona (from a central bus
station?, what's time the bus leaves ?)
    4. how do i get from vielha to prazan/bielsa ? (BTW - are
there any buses on saturday & sunday ????)
    5. i want to walk the path between refugio de pineta & ref.
de Goriz (the day you climb to colado de anisclo) in one
day. is it feasible ?? if not, is there a place to sleep
INDOORS between these places ? thanks in advance

You've picked 2 outstanding locations, both of which are well-
nigh impossible to get to with public transport AFAIK.
Because the Pyrenees run West/East, and the valleys run
North/South. road transport is a nightmare. Ordesa may well
be easier to get to from the French side, since access to
Gavarnie is definitely doable. Then Breche de Roland, and
    you're in.

The only sensible way from Vielha to Bielsa/Circo de Pineta
is in a helicopter, unless you have time for the 5 days
    stunning walk.

You can get from Barcelona to La Pobla de Segur by train via
Lleida in 5 hours or so. (www.renfe.es) Then Espot is only
about 70km, which in the Pyrenees is about 90 minutes taxi
ride (what taxi?). If - and only if - you can get to LPDS on
June 16, and wait for me, I'll give you a lift, as I'm going
to Esterri d'Aneu that day. Cost you a beer.

It's a very long haul up from Pineta to the Goriz hut. Paul
Lucia gives 7hrs 10mins for the opposite (descending)
direction via Anisclo; I've found his timings very tough.
Ask yourself if you can really do
    - from the Pineta direction - 1750 metres ascent and 880
metres descent in a day, particularly when quite a bit of
it is above 2000m. I don't believe there is any roofed
shelter until you get to Goriz, but someone may be along
    to correct me.

Finally, unless you're in the SAS, you're not doing this
    solo, are you?

  3. Definitely easier to access Ordesa from the French side and
that in itself is an enjoyable trip and the Goriz refuge is
    in a stunning location.

    I'm starting the GR10(solo) from Hendaye/Biriatou on 3rd
    June.

    Have a good trip!

David is right it is easier to hike into these places from
the French side, indeed, a good stint on the High Pyrenees
will see you moving across the border on a regular basis.
This is not a bad thing in itself as the scenery on each
side of the border is distinctly different.

I would fly to Pau and then head for Cauterets or Gavernie
(or walk between the two) and then move west or south.

The recently published 'The Pyrenees: The High Pyrenees from
the Cirque de Lescun to the Carlit Massif', by Kev Reynolds
(Cicerone) will have all of the information you need.

  5. hey david.

me & 2 friend (so much for the SAS speculations....) want to
go from Espot (i hear there is a bu from Barcelona about
twice a day, and the taxi is about 8Km form val d'aneu so
it's not that bad) to Vielha, from june 11 to june 15th, and
the to walk the prazan - torla route from 17/6-20/6 do you
think it will be wiser to walk the second route the opposite
direction (torla to prazan)? best regards, tomer BTW i would
gladly get u that beer, but i already booked the flights....

You too, Michael. Perfect start date, I reckon. I'll be
leaving the Cardos valley on 21 June, so we can't buy each
other a beer unless you walk very quickly indeed :-<

There are LandRover buses from Espot up into the National
Park, which is worth doing to save a trudge up the track.
It's either free or peanuts, and takes you to Lake Maurici,
from memory. It's then three not too long stages to,
firstly, Colomers refuge (not too good IMHO - others have
told me d'Amitges is a delight by comparison, but that
would give you an impossibly long day to get to Restanca
for the second night, and thirdly Restanca to Hospital de
Vielha. On this latter stage, take the southern loop if you
can (Lac de Mar, Tort de Ruis). You may need
crampons/axe/poles for some of this in mid-June, but I
guess you've done your research anyway.

From Vielha (which you'll need to hitch to from Hospital de
Vielha) it's quite a lot quicker to go into France, via
Bagneres and St-Lary, to the Bielsa tunnel and thus
Bielsa/Parzan (Bielsa is perfect to stay in at this point
anyway), than to try and get to Torla (also a great place to
overnight). So although most people will be going in the
opposite direction to you - which will make it seem busier
than it really is - Bielsa > Torla makes sense for you. When
you get into the Circo de Pineta, if you're feeling flush
check into the Parador, and if you're feeling less flush
it's still essential to wander in, upstairs, out onto the
verandah and ask the nice man in the uniform to bring you
the best-tasting gin & tonic you've had for ages, for a
remarkably modest sum, while you gaze with horror at the
    following morning's ascent straight opposite.

The Goriz refuge, by the way, although huge, is often very
busy; probably worth phoning ahead (as you're supposed to do
for all of them). Don't drink the red vino, and don't ask me
why a helicopter-supplied refuge has such bad wine in heavy
glass specimen bottles. The "clavijas" route down into the
head of the Ordesa canyon is not too scary, and saves time.
You can hitch, or there may be a minibus, from the Ordesa
    car park down into Torla.

Finally, *please* post details of the public transport when
you get back, both how you got from Barcelona to Espot, and
how you returned from Torla to Barcelona. I'm not the only
one who would be interested, I'm sure.

    Enjoy.

  9. Forgot to mention; I'm building a Pyrenees web site. It's
still under construction so don't expect too much - I've
only done about two pages - but I'll be adding to it later.
    It's www.myxpyrenees.name

  10. Please don't talk about the Goriz refuge. It's awful! There
are so many people there and a lot of them are aging men
with urinary retention and snoring problems, which
unfortunately does not stop them from downing several
bottles of beer, hardly a way to alleviate the need to keep
getting up at night to go to the toilets, which are 100
metres away from the refuge. On a really bad day there will
be a group of Brits on one of those adventure packages run
by well known companies that we have all heard off. Usually
there are about 6 to the group and they have a 23 year old
`guide`. The clients usually drink themselves stupid and
make it really embarrassing for any other Brit that happens
to be around. Unfortunately, the guides will also confirm to
you that the alcohol "helps to maintain group cohecian".

  12. Surely snoring is something you have to accept in huts. Anyway, I have good
memories of Goriz and most other Pyrenean huts and take exception to
comments about old men with urinary retention problems. I'm 58 and I leave
    for the Pyrenees tomorrow!!!!

  13. I have no problem at all with the snoring or the older men
getting up to go for a pee. The problem is the "bottles of
beer" which make both of these conditions worse.

I leave for the Pyrenees on the 1st July, hoping to bag a
few more 3000m peaks, which is my lifes project. Have a
    nice time.

Surely snoring is something you have to accept in huts.

Please don't talk about the Goriz refuge. It's awful!
There are so many people there and a lot of them are
aging men with urinary retention and snoring problems,
which unfortunately does not stop them from downing
several bottles of beer, hardly a way to alleviate the
    need to keep

Ouch! I did say it was busy...

The last time I was there, I and my partner were the
only furriners, as far as I could tell, and there was no
bad behaviour, not even from us.

I won't say nobody snored, though.
