    Summary:

    Although movement at the knee declined with ageing,
    Hamilton found that the loss of range of motion at the hip
    was even greater - dropping by 38 per cent between the ages
    of 35 and 90. There was a slight age-related difference
    between the two different types of range-of-motion decline,
    with knee 'stiffness' striking with greatest force after
    the age of 50 and hip problems waiting until the age of 60
    or so. However, Hamilton's research suggested that
    preservation of hip flexibility was more important for
    maintaining speed, compared with the maintenance of knee
    suppleness.

    Specifically, Hamilton found that the key to optimal hip
    range of motion was the conservation of hip mobility in the
    kick or drive phase of running - when the foot becomes a
    rigid lever for toe-off, the gluteal and hamstring muscles
    recoil and contract to propel the leg backward, and the
    quads also activate themselves to help straighten the leg
    for the backward push. We can call this basic motion hip
    extension - the backward movement of the leg at the hip.

    But how can older runners preserve adequate hip extension
    and thus stride length - and younger harriers improve on the
    extension they already have? Certainly, flexibility of the
    quadriceps muscles is one key, since over- tight quads will
    resist backward leg movements. Consistent and thorough
    stretching routines for the quads - carried out only after a
    thorough warm-up - can certainly help make the quads and
    their associated connective tissues more supple.

    However, Hamilton points out that another key is to
    deliberately alter the way you run, eg, to focus more on
    using the muscles around the buttocks to push backward on
    each step.

    I neglected to specify that I was looking for similar
    studies for swimming in particular. Answers to questions
    like: Does stroke length decrease as we age? What is the
    cause for that? Is stroke length rather than stroke rate
    the variable that changes the most? What can/should a
    swimmer focus on to continue to improve or reduce the rate
    of decline?

  3. I think that the single greatest problem for aging swimmers
    is the fact that almost everyone (women more than men, but
    men also) develop compression/compacting of the anterior (front-
    facing) part of their vertebral bodies. This is often
    noticeable as early as the 50s and accelerates thereafter.
    This leads to a forward-tilted, hunched-forward posture
    which is incompatible with a good aquatic bodyline for
    anything other than backstroke swimming. My 91 year old
    father (a competitive swimmer since age 6) can now swim
    distinctly faster backstroke than freestyle because of this.

    The compression would increase the forward range of motion,
    but can't it be countered with increased muscle tone? You
    know, the lordosis you're so fond of (me too).

    I was told once that part (not all) of the stooping problem
    with elders is that they neglect stretching exercises. Is
    this not true? I know some elderly people who are nearly as
    straight as an arrow and others who are bent 'way forward.
    And, wouldn't the intake of calcium help with this problem
    in that it helps prevent osteoporosis?

    I actually improved my best times in everything but sprint
    freestyle (where I was never any good anyway) up until age
    42. None of my times in any events was anywhere near the
    elite swimmers, but the training load I maintained year
    round was pretty much the same as them.

    And then I stopped training so hard, because it was taking
    up too much of my life. I don't know what I could do now,
    but I find that I no longer desire to spend that much time
    and energy on swimming. I never did like racing as much as I
    like training. I still like training, but now I like
    training for the fitness and the fellowship more than
    training to improve my times. I think this is a
    psychological effect of aging.

    Thanks to all who replied to my question. It was interesting
    to see that the sprints were relatively faster than
    distance. I would have expected the opposite.

    I am 74 years old. Very straight in the back and shoulders,
    the belly flat and in. Actually, I can say that since I
    started swimming steadily, about 20 years ago, I've gained a
    better standing posture. I think that the reasons are:

    1) I swim 80 minutes a day to do about 2,200 mtr. This is
    half the speed I had then, but in the meantime I passed
    open heart surgery, so I watch my rhythm.

    Half of the swimming I do in backstroke, and I think this is
    a point to be stressed, because it is this style which puts
    the greater strain on the back and shoulder muscles. The
    other half I alternate between 3/4 freestyle and one quarter
    breast (I feel that this style is important too for the
    flexibility of the leg joints - I can squat with my bottom
    brushing the floor).

    2) In addition, I do yoga twice a week, and this may add
    also to flexibility and stomach muscles strength.

    Of course, although I didn't monitor my height, it is
    possible that I am several cm. shorter, owing to the
    shortening of intervertebral gaps. But this has nothing to
    do with the stooping problem.

    methods as well. You didn't have 81 year old Bill Bells
    doing the Alcatraz triathlon way back then - btw he looks
    pretty good and gained 30 minutes over his time as an 80 yo.

    I'm going to be more optimistic - use it or lose it, and
    just hope to avoid any accidents that keep you out of
    action too long.

    Regarding Bill Bells...DEFINITELY. I feel the same way. Be
    an athlete until you are dead is the way to go.

    The one thing which might significantly modify the
    inevitability of progressive vertebral body and disk
    compression are the new "bisphosphonate" drugs. They
    clearly work, but we have no idea about long term
    effectiveness and long term side effects and they are
    currently horrendously expensive.

    But vertebral compression is caused by the same things
    which cause wrinkles, degeneration and gravity and the law
    of gravity isn't going to be repealed any time soon.

    Back in the mists of time, when I was in high school, during
    my yearly physical, my doctor said, "You have a slight
    lumbar scoliosis." I asked what I should do about it, and he
    said, "Keep swimming. Swimming slightly stretches out the
    spine." ...especially for people like me who have no kick.
