Puncture Protection?

The wrench at my LBS says you can have the weight of flat protection or
the wait while you fix a flat. Light wheels are nice, but I'll take the
trade off.
I live in goathead country too. I've been slimed for two years now, no
flats. Slime *is* nasty if you have a blow-out.
In my experience, liners slow the inevitable but don't prevent flats.
Also, they can slip out of place giving a side wall great flat
protection (not normally helpful).

I also own an M-80 (good choice) . The weight diff. between a heavy
duty tube and the tube thats on it will be nill - you wont notice a
thing. Since you are going to do rode with occasional rutted mountain,
you may want to consider semi- slick tires, I have Hutchisen semi
slick tires and they are much lighter that the Velasaraptors (sp?)
that come with an M-80. Plus they rock on hard pack - I never ride in
the mud anyway....

Yeah, I recently had the same problem. I found that tire liners w/the heavy
duty thorn resistant tubes work very well against goat heads. The tubes are
so thick (and heavy) that I was able to run 30 psi without getting
snake-bites when I previously required 45 psi. Slime and a thin tube weigh
less and work well, but you can't run the lower PSI. Oddly enough, too, I
was no longer getting goatheads with the lower pressure and/or tire liner.
I would've at least expected to find the goatheads lodged in the tire but
no, no goatheads! I was getting a few dozen per ride before. An awesome
lightweight solution would be Stan's No Tubes kit.

Look for a tire with a built in kevlar liner. Serfas makes a line of tires
that have this feature. Then add in your normal tire liner and thorn
resistant tubes, and your practically bulletproof.

I'm almost strictly road on my mtb, and i use the serfas drifter tires with
a liner and regular tube...and man does that tire/liner combo take a
beating. I've found all sorts of shrapnel in my tires....thorns broken
glass, metal bits, rocks...none of it ended up being a flat.

Thanks for all the replies. Still don't know what I'm going to do. Maybe
just let the LBS do the slime thing and see how it works.

Odds are that it'll be fine. I run tubeless and was very hesistant about
slopping Stan's into them for puncture protection because of what I
perceived to be extra weight and potential for mess. I didn't notice a
thing and I wouldn't be without it now.
