Puncture proof tyres

Over here in the Netherlands we have the mark "Vredestein punture-proof". Is obtainable in England
too? There will allways be a change to get a puncture, but with this tire it is much less...

Get the kevlar belt tyre liners ('Slime' do them, not the same as the gunk you can put in tubes).
They are Very Effective - although you might still get sidewall or pinch punctures in unfortunate or
careless circumstances, they really do work IME - to the extent that I would say, no, you do not
have to just accept the fact that punctures happen!

Hope you don't mind if I jump in and ask for some opinions on some p*n*ture proof tyres. It's time to get some new ones, as I'm fed up withwhat I'm using, but which ones? Conti top touring (£30 per pair) or Schawlbe City Marathon £18 per pair? Has anyone got any opionons on these 2 as regards keeping the p*n*ture fairy away?

I have the Schwalbes on one bike. They are heavier than the less puncture resistant equivalents from
Scwalbe. My limited experience of them is one week's touring and a couple of day rides. I did at one
point run over a drawing pin. The tyre stayed up, I stopped to remove it from the tyre and there was
no problem. Of course a drawing pin is probably just about the right length for the thicker part of
the puncture protection layer and its head stops it going in any further. A thorn would probably
snap before being pushed far enough in to cause a puncture but I don't know how they'd fair with
flint or glass shards.

I'm happy with them so far. The extra weight isn't that much when put into the context of a loaded
tourer and me.

Just moved onto specialized Armadillo's. Quite heavy but strong as an ox for road and dry
trail riding.

Thanks for the replies, everyone. It seems that there are some effective products on the market - I
shall investigate.

I wonder though if tyre/tube manufacturers are doing enough in this field? Is it not against their
interests to develop tyres and tubes that last a long time? Or maybe I am just a cynic :-)

Without alerting the p*nct*re fairy, my last set of Armadillo's or similar didn't have the sidewall
protection, and I went at least a thousand miles without a hitch. These ones also have reinforced
sidewalls, so should prove even better. I cycle mainly around South London and regularly travel over
glass. Although I do try and avoid it, sometimes it's inevitable, and I'm never fussed. I just watch
out to see if any big bits are sticking around. So, I feel Specialized have done their bit. 🙂
