Pumps

Mini pump or a track pump (is it what they are called?)?

For mini pump, I carry a Blackburn Air Stick with my roadies. Bought it a while ago for $40. It has dual-way action, and can go up to 100 psi. Lightwieght and good to carry for emergencies. However, even for a road tyre, takes like 100 strokes to get to the pressure! So it may take forever to pump a mountain bike. I just bought a larger version (Topeak brand; $35) for carrying with my MTB. Both pumps support both presta and schreader fittings.

For a proper pump that I use at home for regular use, I have one (forgot the brand and model, I can check if you want) that is rated to go to 160 psi. I pump up to 130 psi with it all the time, and it's smooth. It has a "clever pump" feature that automatically works with both types of tube fittings. Bought it for $60 and has a fully metal outer shell and a built-in gauge (accurate, compared it with my digital gauge).

THE top full-size pump. And for home use, or to put in the car tothe start of a ride, get a Silca
stand pump.

Floor pump or portable ?

We have a cheap(ish) Tioga(sp?) floor pump, it's quite nice. Actually, I can't fault it.

I also have a Crank-Bros aluminium mini-pump. It's ok, but I wouldn't want to go much over 60psi
with it (on a 2" tyre), It's also ripped the valve out of a few presta tubes, but this was probably
operator error.

There was a semi-portable foot pump named something like "Bikers Dream" reviewed in a previous
edition of Velo Vision. It received a glowing report, and I have read elsewhere of their goodness.
Next pump I'm going to buy will be one of these, but for touring not day-rides.

That's what I bought today, Blackburn AS-1 Airstik, $39 at MBC (Prahran). Supposedly
retails for $49.

Yup! But at least my front tyre is no longer in danger of a pinch puncture. Now I'm worried about
over-pumping my tyres (recommended 50-75 psi). They're *hard*.

Greetings, I had Ethel the Zephyl for years, the old metal ones worked well. Had a Blackburn pump
for a while, but the ends kept wearing out. Currently have a tiny German thing called an Air-Boy,
works fine provided you keep your thumb over the hole to keep the air in. Regards, Ray.

As good as the HPX is (I actually had to use it yesterday on somebody else's tyres), it seems like a
lot of hard work after using the track pump at home all the time 🙂

I also use the Silca/Zefal hpx combo. One tip however, get the longest Zefal that will fit your frame as you push more air with the longer barrel.
