One of the advantages of such a system is that you can post a message
anonymously. Some people might want to draw attention to a sale they see
in
local shop without giving away precisely where they live. You can also use
your regular Usenet handle or real name if you want people to know who the
post came from.

At the moment, the board is configured with one 'open' forum so you don't
even have to register to post. If any abuses cropped up I could switch it
to subscriber only.

A full PHPBB system might seem a bit cumbersome for a single forum but I
think that this is the best way of doing it. People can create a new topic
or add to comments to a topic. They can also make enquires and see the
answers. I'll probably set it up so that old messages get deleted after
three months or so.

The idea would be that, rather than checking all of the sites that have
these sorts of sales each week, you could just keep checking the one site.

On purely selfish grounds, I would like the scope to include Camping and
Cycling related bargains.

Any interest in the idea? Any suggestions?

Well Mike, it looks like a reasonably good idea - so I'm not sure why you
haven't had much response - unless I'm just not seeing them.

However, wouldn't it be easier (for you especially) if people just posted
messages about bargains here.

it looks like people are already posting bargains there - I wish they'd post
them here as I check this group more regularly.

One of the reasons for a lack of response might be that many/some of
the urw contributors also use the www.outdoorsmagic.com forums where a
"bargains" thread is already running?

Not to mention the fact that as soon as someone posts a heads-up here
all the stock disappears...

It's not hard to check the appropriate websites from time to time to
spot bargains, you know.

I'm a bit disappointed about the lack of response as I still feel that the
idea is sound (well I would wouldn't I? :-)

You've just summed up my rational behind the central notice board idea - to
consolidate all the notices in one place.

Anyway, thanks a lot for replying to the thread. Even if you don't seem to
be 100% behind the idea, a bit of feedback, for OR against is most welcome.

I disagree with you on that one, Fran. I would consider Lidl, Aldi and
Netto (the three marks of high quality!) to be the main sites that are
worth checking (I'm just going to write up a notice regarding the Lidl sale
on the 23). However, occasionally, other shops have sales that could be
useful to people. For example, I don't think that many people will check
the Safeway or Halfords websites each week to see if they have any outdoor
related bargains. And then, not all shops display all of their special
offers on a website.

By way of further example, my local Millets has a "buy three items,
cheapest item free" but I didn't pay enough attention to it last time I was
in the town center. I don't think that Millets' website feature all of
their special offers.

Maybe the idea /would/ be better if it was added as a new forum to an
existing site. That would depend on a willing site being found and that the
site be willing to add a forum that allows anonymous posting, without
signing up. That's a important feature of the idea, IMO.

Ah, I see what you mean. But not all offers are worth having. I
think I'd only want to hear about the really spectacular ones. Other
people will have other preferences, of course.
