profile handlebar failure

  1. ok- so I was finishing a road ride yesterday, went over a small bump, standing up while riding, and
    the right side of my handlebar just completely sheared away right at the stem. just bought these new
    last year- a profile aluminum handlebar ( about $50)

    luckily managed to stay upright ( not sure how I pulled that off)- after the initial confused/scared
    5 or 10 minutes, I was a bit [censored] at how crappy this handlebar was constructed, and how it really
    could have led to my untimely demise. anyone else have experiences with this and profile? maybe I
    was just cranky while riding 10 miles home in traffic holding on to only the stem. that was fun.

    also - any recommendations for a better constructed road bar?

  2. the guy that owned my bike before me had the same thing happen with some kind of handlebars (dont know kind though, sorry).... he said he was riding, and one side just snapped off, simple as that... but yes, ive heard of it!

  3. the stem junction is the point of maximum stress - no surprises there. most modern alloy handlebars
    carry replacement warnings recommending change on an annual/mileage basis. unless you change to a
    steel or carbon bar, it is best to follow those instructions.

    in addition, even small scratches caused by fitting can be stress risers which nucleate fatigue, so
    beware of that when replacing.

    finally, make sure you have a stem that is radiused at the inside edge of the clamp. some don't have
    that [though most modern ones do] - it's also a potential stress riser.

    It is ridiculous to have a bar break in a year or less -- or require replacement in a year, absent
    some giant problem like a sharpened stem-clamp radius or hack-saw wounds to the bar. Profile bars
    are warranted for two years, and it does not appear to me that Profile recommends replacement on an
    annual basis. The product information mentions that lifespan may vary depending on use, but does not
    state what an expected lifespan may be for Al bars.

    The sacrifices we make to the weight gods are mind boggling. I have Cinelli bars from the early '70s
    that are totally beaten-up and probably will never break -- unless I hit them with a sledge hammer.
    In fact, I hit a pair with a garage (along with my bike on the roof of the car) and they just bent
    -- and my forks broke. Sniff, sniff. They were great old steel forks. I could get fenders under

    I read an article a few years back where they did fatigue tests on bars, alu, carbon, Ti. The carbon
    bars actually fared pretty well. And when they failed, they actually slowly disintegrated, they
    didn't just snap off. So really, they're probably not a bad choice. Of course, it all depends on the
    design of the bar, whether it's superlight or whatever. Unlike CF frames, where I'm rather dubious
    about the bonding techniques, a handlebar would make more sense to me. I've seen a Trek OCLV tube
    out of the bike and it is a very tough material.

    Good handlebars of old had a double wall in the clamp area. That would make them strong. Now it seems like most bars have a formed bulge to increase the diameter for the clamp. The forming would tend to thin the walls and make them weaker. I like the double wall idea better and you still can find it made by Nitto.     They don't have grooves for cables or ergo shapes in the drop bends. That does not bother me personally. They are georgous polished aluminum.

    Yes to fatigue failures, not to failures caused by damage.
