  1. Hi,

I have had problems with the joints in my fingers for 3 weeks or so now.
The blisters are fine, I can deal with those. It feels particularly bad
in the morning, and I can't even flex them fully. But some of the
tension releases when I stretch. I do not feel pain constantly. However
it does hurt in the joints when I put stress on my fingers, such as when
I hop. I probably pull too much on the seat when I hop. I do have KH
    seats.

Is it possible to ride through this? I'm worried that I may cause a
permanent injury if I don't do something about it. But I do need a lot
of motivation to stay away from my unis. How long would I need to stay
away from it for it to heal properly? Two weeks?

  2. I sometimes found the KH handle to be a little thin. Experiment with
holding the saddle with different parts of your fingers if that makes
    sense.

I used to get sore fingers, but hardly ever now, unless doing a lot of
seat out stuff. That's a good point, are you holding the saddle in or
out front? If out in front, then padding may be the answer. You could
also try wrapping hockey or even duct tape around the handle to thicken
    it up a bit.

For certain things I find that taking a rest eases the pain or
discomfort but only until I start again. Sometimes it's best to ride
through it and it won't bother you. This may not happen for you, but see
what does and doesn't work. Take learning to ride for example, I used to
get incredibly sore knees and innerthigh etc, but now I can ride for
hours and not feel a thing.

I recently got a trials bike, so I have been spending more time on my
hands (due to no saddle) which are sore. It's getting better and better
though, getting used to the bike and developing callouses!

There's always things to do on a uni that don't involve holding the
saddle, so you needn't postpone unicycling altogether.

Could be similar to pain I have encountered as a climber. If so, my
wholehearted advice is to cure the pain before it turns into a long
term problem. Take it easy for a while (days to a couple of weeks),
modify your riding style to reduce the stress, work on aspects of
riding that don't require the use of your fingers. Think of this as
natures way of suggesting periodization in your training. My
experiennce is I come out stronger in the long run when I pay close
attention to signs of overuse and take steps to minimize them.

Sounds like good advice to me. To keep on usinmg your hands could lead to a
repetitive strain injury and then you'll be in real trouble.

How old are you Ulf? Sounds like classic arthritis!I used to also get it from alot of decending on a mountianbike that had crappy brakes.
Try a cycling glove or a thin padded full glove.Take some motrin before it hurts.I think you will adapt to it.You could also squeeze a rubber ball to strengthen your fingers and hands. cheechee

  7. OK, thanks for the advice!

I probably already knew that taking a break from trials and the stuff
that hurt my hands was the answer.. But I kind of needed someone to tell
    me that personally. :-)

It mostly hurts when I do rolling hops and seat in hops.. Maybe I should
focus more on seat out when I get back to it. In the meantime I'll just
practice backwards wheel walk and coasting..

In the previous threads I saw that people had suggested gloves. Well, I
went to a bike shop yesterday to see what they could offer.. The gloves
they had were pretty expensive and the part that would go around the
fingers was not padded at all. I'm sure that they would help for sore
skin, but do you think they would make any difference for me? If I could
find gloves with a thick rubber layer on the fingers maybe that would
    reduce the stress?
