Lets cut to the chase. I purchased a wheelset (Xero XR-1) which was labeled shimano 8/9/10 compatible. My bike is equipped with tiagra front triple / 105 rear 9 speed. I tried to install the cassette (SRAM PG950) and found it would not fit. After a bit of research I came to the conclusion that the new wheels have the 'newer' style dura-ace alloy freehub which have the deeper serrations/taller splines.
Question now is, what are my options? Purchase a 10 speed cassette (Ultegra 6600 or D/A) and adjust deralliuers/limits? Is that even possible? If so would I also need a 10 spd chain? Source out a new or possibly swap the freehub from my old wheels? The new wheels use a sealed bearing, old wheels have the 'loose' ball bearings?
I would change the freehub. If you were to change to a 10 speed cassette, you would also have to change not only the chain but the rear derailer and your brifters. This would be much more expensive than a freehub.

Bring the wheel(s) back and tell them you want the listed compatibility.
After doing some research and looking at both hubs/freehubs, I've found that these freehubs will not be cross compatible. The 2004+ dura ace style freehub is attached to the axle instead of being mounted to the hub with the 10mm allen hollow bolt. Completely different design. And I can't take them back as I purchased them from ebay (previous owner used a 10speed cassette so all was fine), after doing tons of research never found a mention that these would be 10speed only. Their company site, and every other site lists that these are 8/9/10. I've tried to contact them directly, but always recieve some generic response with little to no useful information. And I haven't found a local place that carries these wheels.

It sounds like you found one of those situations that is difficult to extract yourself from. Miche make individual cassette cogs that fit the "10 speed" spline. I haven't sought out the whole solution, but you may be able to attain 9 Miche cogs and 8 spacers to make up a 9 speed compatible solution.

That sounds like a very plausible idea, I will look into it and attempt to contact them or a distributor. Thanks!
