  1. Has anyone ordered stuff from probikekit since they stopped paying the customs duty?

It's time to get some more stuff so I'm wondering what the likelihood of being stung with
    import duty is.

www.customs.gov.au just says that you _may_ be liable for GST and/or import duty for anything you
purchase over the Internet. I'll have to ring their 1300 number to find out details tomorrow.

    Cheers. -Nick

I have received gear since without any problems, I suspect that it might depend on how big
    your order is.

  3. I have heard that if the order is under $50 then you will be fine. Otherwise, clothing gets charged a 35% levy if its over that amount. If you know anyone in the UK, it would pay to get it sent to them and then get them sent to you as a "gift".

I did before they started to pay the customs duty .. some of my orders were up to AU$260 and didn't end up with any duties, GST or other levies applied.

When I order stuff from them, I try to keep it in the $200-250 range (enough to get the free shipping, but not so much so customs starts sniffing at it.)

The amount of inaccurate information being posted in this thread is staggering - see the end of my
post for an example. There are four points you need to concern yourself with.

    1. Quality of online retailer. I've ordered from pbk on at least 10 occasions now and find them to
be excellent. They're prompt, communicate well and always willing to assist you in any way
possible. I should stress I have no affiliation or involvement with them.

    2. Customs duty and ordering mechanisms. Details relating to customs are clearly described on the
customs website for all to read. In short, if the total cost of your order is AUS$500.00 or more
(incl. freight) then GST will be charged. Less than that amount and no GST is applicable (for
bike clothing). From my experience, this also applies to bike tyres, tubes, tools and individual
components. Import a bike frame, fork or complete groupset and customs duty will be charged
regardless of the total cost of the order.

    3. Ordering from the UK website. Pbk's initial screen allows you to choose the region you are from.
Choosing the UK region is slightly quicker as he goods are sent directly to you with normal
customs rules (above) applicable. Thus, if the total cost of your order is less than AUS$500.00
then there is no GST payable.

Note that if you get the sizing wrong or have a problem with the goods, you will be responsible for
the costs involved in returning them to the UK - you cannot ship it to the Australian location and
expect them to take care of it.

    4. Ordering from the Australian website. If you choose the Australian website, your goods will take
a little longer to arrive. Pbk in the UK sends a batch order approximately once per week with all
orders included to the Australian distribution centre. This batch attracts GST which is then
passed on to you the customer on a pro rata basis
    - even if you order is for a pair of gloves costing AUS$20.00

If you should receive the wrong size or if the product is defective, you need only pay for returning
the items to the Australian distribution centre
    - it is then pbk's responsibility to get it back to the UK and replace the product.

    Hope this helps,

    Steve.

P.S. Below is what I am talking about in terms in accurate information:

AFAIK the "$50" comes in where iff the duty+GST would be > $50 then it is charged, otherwise it's
deemed to not be worth it. Some of the American couriers always charge GST as part of their import
process. Whether it is a gift or not, duty is still payable. You can

There is an old ploy with bringing in extra duty-free alcohol. Bring in more than the allowance, but
stay under that $50 duty barrier, so no tax is payable.

Does this really work? Would it work in, say, 3 months time? ;-)

You are much better off (if you like that) in buying the full 2 litres of more expensive alcohol -
say a couple of bottles of single malt.

If you like bundy however, you could probably get in about 3 litres...

    *shrug*

I've neveer done it, we used to buy duty free grog, but it ended up going off before we drank it
(Baileys separates after a few years on the shelf)... So now we only get one bottle or nothing.

Let me know if you go OS again and I'll put in an order for some bourbon or scotch - no separation
    problems with these two! ;-)

Have rung and spoken to someone at customs this morning and this is the official line:
(cost of goods *.25 (clothing duty)) + postage on goods) *.10 (gst) = full price of goods.

    This applies to all amounts.

I tried to order from the UK website as recommended by the "oracle" above but this can not be done. You must go through the Australian link.

Should that be cost * 1.25 (in that you are paying a premium for clothing)?
