I think Castelli tried 6 panel on some lines as an alternative claiming the fabric was suitable for fitting at least as well as typical 8 panel. Other than that, I know that most if not all of the top makers use 8 panel construction.

Doesn't it suck how much the Euro has hurt prices on European made apparel? Only a few years ago it was rare to see any bibs aside from Assos that were over a "C note". That seems to be the opening price for most apparel lines now. I haven't purchased any Euro' apparel since 2002. I like to have at least a few really "best available" for those really long rides I may be needing to do when I am not fully in the mood to plant my ass for that long. Good bib shorts like Vermac or the top-of-the-line bibs from Santini, Castelli, Biemme etc. can make the difference between finishing the whole ride or ditching early. Believe it or not, I still have some faded but functional Descente shorts from the first time around (they pulled out of the US market for cycling apparel for about 10 years IIRC until relaunching a few years ago) but being the best *non-bib* shorts (plus the severely faded fabric) means that they serve the same purpose for indoor rides that the ultra-comfy bibs do for LSD-when-getting-over-trained rides. Actually, the most comfortable bib shorts I have are from a prototype team bibs with no labels and I can't remember who made them. I just remember they are US made (or maybe "Aussie" with s successful attempt at making the very best?). What makes them amazing is they have the perfect balance between snug fit on the quads and hamstrings without choking the jewels. I some times wonder if the obscure "King Missile" band were cyclists based on their one big hit. Ah well, nack to reality...

It's not the currency, euro, it's the chic association "Euro". Our prices changed with about a 1% fudge from guilders/francs/DM, but the move to only upscale selling is a business plan. For those who don't need to wear their labels on the outside, we have Décathlon, which sells a great pair of bib shorts for around 30€. Santini makes a great short for a selling price around 50€. Polti is there with one for about 35€. All of them do me fine from 60-240km. But I'm not using them to broadcast that I'm just sooooo cooooool. Just for riding. Not a fashion show. -- Bonne route -

I can't speak to your specific question about the team shorts, but I buy other garments from Probikekit.com. The team jerseys, vests, and gloves that I have purchased appear to be authentic team kit, and at half the price you'd pay for the stuff from WCP or other USA suppliers. If they say the shorts are genuine team issue, I would give them the benefit of the doubt that they are telling the truth. I've also bought Castelli jerseys from them on end-of-season closeout for less than half of what they cost here. They also have really low prices on Vittoria and Conti tubulars, as another poster has noted. You might shoot them an email asking about the shorts. I have contacted them with questions in the past, and they have been responsive.
