Presta valves unscrewing

So you've pumped your tyres up 100,000 times then?

I have been using presta valves for 3+ years WITHOUT caps and I've NEVER
had an issue with valves.

What brand of tube are they? Perhaps try something different?

hmm agreed, never had 1 unscrew, broken a few with hand pumps, but never had one unscrew on me.

Yep, the cap goes back on. And no Hippy, it's not the CAP I'm taking
about but the locking down of the valve. Currently I think I'm riding
on Salsa's.

I realise you were talking about the valve inner and not the cap, but
I'm saying that the cap adds unnecessary weight for no benefit (that I
can see).

I use valve caps on schraeder valves because they tend to be on my mtb's
and, because of their 'recessed' design, are susceptible to small stones
or twigs jamming the valve open. When racing, I leave the caps off for
quicker tube swaps in the event of a puncture.

I didn't know Salsa made tubes. Perhaps try something boring like Tioga
or Incomex?

try leaving them off. see if they still unscrew. it's possible that the
process of unscrewing the cap also unscrews the valve. it shouldn't
matter because the air won't start to come out until you press in the
unscrewed valve anyway.

Definitely worth trying since I seem to be the only freak that it is
happening to. Or is it because I'm the only freak that uses the dust

No, it happens to me too, on occasion. Though it appears to be more a
specific tube issue rather than a generic presta problem.

Cant remember mine doing that but I will take note now I have presta on the
road and mtb..

Found out that 100psi is no good for the crappy rim 'rubber' on my MTB...
got a flat on the inside of the tube, it had pressed so hard through the
rubber tape that it started to leak.. Another job for some decent rim
tape..

I think you'll find you're screwing the cap on too tight and when you
unscrew it unscrews tha valve with it.

BTW, I agree with hippy in that valve caps serve no useful purpose. I've
been capless for many years with no trouble.

But regarding the weight of valve caps - hippy, eat less chocolate 😉

process of unscrewing the cap also unscrews the valve. it shouldn't
matter because the air won't start to come out until you press in the
unscrewed valve anyway.

It will matter. Unscrewing the valve from the stem will let the air out
regardless of whether the valve core is tight.

Yeah I've found the standard plastic tape is usually [censored]. I've used
Zefal or Velox cloth tape with good results.

I don't believe that the cap prevents [censored] (or at least enough [censored] to
worry about) getting into the pump for a couple of reasons.
First, I use a frame pump when on the road and this thing gets covered
in the same [censored] that the Pug and I get covered in when it's raining -
more so than the valve due to its position.
Second, the cap doesn't cover the whole valve but the pump fittings do -
so if there was [censored] on the valve the cap would only keep part of the
valve clean, not the rest which is still inserted into the pump.
Third, the valve doesn't get that dirty.
Fourth, if it did get dirty, it's a small thing to wipe if off.
