Prescription eyewear recommendations

Rudy Project's Perception Flip Up are nice, my father is using them and
he is very happy. They have a lot of models and they all have
replaceable lenses.

I owned a top-end bike shop for many years, and the best options I
know of (in UK at least) are
1. Oakley - they will fit prescription lenses up to +3 and -2 into
Oakley frames - only certain frames are available for the process, and
it is NOT cheap.
2. Bolle make cycling glasses into which you clip a pair of
prescription glasses (custom made) without arms (sort of pince-nez).
Again the cost is not trivial. I suggest you go to your nearest
Oakley/Bolle dealer and enquire.

Info is about 5 years old, so things might have changed.

I'll ditto the recommendation for Bollé glasses. I've used them for
about 12 years. I tried contacts, but the toroidal ones were very
fragile. I started out with the Edge models and changed to Vigilantes
when they wore out. They work fine in most weather, but they tend to
fog in cold, humid weather.

I use Bolle Parole with an insert that fits belhind the frame. Vigilante is
the same but for wider faces. Had them for about 5 years. Work great. That
said take a look at the Rudy Project options.

These folks turned up at a race expo once. They were called "In-Spex" then;
I have reordered from them. They are based in/near Lancaster, PA (USA).

Anyway, the customer service has always been great. I have purchased two
different pairs of the Adidas branded prescription sunglasses from them.
The Adidas shades are very durable. The style isn't really "out there"
either. That is, you won't look strange when you use them off-the-bike.

I have had the Oakley M-Frame with the integrated prescription. I find them
overpriced and fragile, but comfortable. At the time (10 years ago) they
were the only design that did not bump my eyelashes.

If the eyelash thing is an issue for you, just note that I could not make
any model Bolle work for me. Adidas is the same idea (clip-on) but seems to
have a wider range of adjustments.

Frank: I have Oakley prescription sunglasses, and they are *phenomenal.*
Despite continuous abuse they somehow remain unscratched, the image is
stellar, and of course they're light and fit nicely. The downside? Cost.
They're expensive, upwards of $200. But very, very nice. The lens I use, I
believe, is the VR28, which is a good general purpose lens for just about
anything aside from extraordinarily-bright days. I use them for such days as
well, but a darker lens might be better. The VR28 compromise gives me a lens
I can still see through on dark, tree-covered descents.

I have a pair of Adidas with inserts. Like most cycling glasses, they
are fragile and ridiculously over-priced. I also think the insert
approach is crappy from an optical quality POV. If I had it to do over
again, I wouldn't. I would just buy a nice pair of Rx sunglasses. I
tend to use my Rx sunglasses most of the time, anyway.

I've got Oakley Racing Jackets (1 set clear, 1 set black iridium) with
prescription lenses, and I concur with Mike about how good they are.
Not cheap though - I bought mine a year ago, 265GBP for each pair.

Worth every penny, 'cos the chix really dig my groovy shades.

I second the recommendation of Jim Albright at rx-spex. I had a pair of rx
sunglasses for cycling done by him last year. He gives great advice, and
speaks from vast experience. He was also one of the best vendor's I've ever
done business with. His prices were very good as well. I was getting
progressive rx lenses and he knew just how far you could take this type of
lens and not suffer bizarre distortions which would render them
unacceptable. Local opticians I spoke with told me that such a setup as Jim
did wouldn't have much of a chance of working. He also did my lenses with
"transitions" material so I could handle evening rides which end up as a
night ride.

Yet another plug for Oakley prescription glasses: I've had a pair of
Straight Jackets with G30 lenses for about 2 years. They're excellent.
I've used them for riding, driving, all kinds of things. The G30 is a
very versatile lens, and in general they're very durable glasses.

Thanks for all the feedback. I think I'll bite the bullet and contact
rx-spec and Oakley. I have a pretty bad astigmatism, I have a feeling
that the amount of correction required will limit my options.

Yea, my mom likes my glasses too.

I have Bolle wraparound prescription sunglasses. Took the shop three tries
to bend the lenses properly. Nicely, they paid for the first two sets. I
guess it was a bit of a PITA.

I bought a pair of Zeal prescription glasses directly from ZEAL Optics.
They have changeable lenses but I bought a pair of lenses that change
with light since I run at night and ride at dusk alot. I am happy with
them. The only drawback is that they might not get dark enough for you
but you can try the multi lens options.
