  1. I have just seen the film and frankly I feel sick!
Always Bowerman in the background selling shoes.
4th was his highest placing in a race with any competiion - under achiever?
He wasnt even a miler - Seb Coe would have kicked his ass!
    Corporate nonsense.

  2. He was "pre" in bed too...

Around where I live they all talk about him as though he was God, and

What's your fastest 5k time ? When you can run low 13:20s, get back to us.

BTW, Pre could kick Coes butt in anything longer than a mile. Coe was not
even close to low 13s for 5k.

    Cheers,

That's why his GF was such a [censored].

  7. OK he ran 13.20 and was 4th in the world rankings for 1972.
Also 4th at the Munich Olympics.
That doesnt make him the best athlete ever to step on a track - as the
Nike machine would have us believe.
Great potential - but then he died, and thats where the Hollywood
    scriptwriters got interested.
Obviously Sebs 1500 times would translate to low 13 minutes if he did
the sessions and wanted to (and he could kick!)- but thats my opinion.
I cant run low 13.20s by the way!

Also had top race times for every distance from mile to 10k -- and achieved
all of this in his early 20s.

3.38 for 1500 - thats a good time, though nothing amazing even in the 70s - top time? in his college ranking you mean?

I don't think the "Nike machine" care if you pick someone else instead --
after all, El-G, arguably one of the greatest runners of all time, is also a
Nike athlete. The 1500m/5000m double is right up there with Zatopek's 5k/10k/
    Marathon triple.

Yes El G is a legend because apart from setting records, he also went
to the championships, got through the rounds, and got the medals -
sometimes 'just' silver. He has that in common with Seb and several
    others, though not with Pre.

Well, it makes for a more interesting story, doesn't it ?

If you want to watch a bio about a record holder, get "endurance" or something.

It just amuses me a bit to see the 'Pre Legend' being rewritten to
    sell shoes.
Legends 'should' be made by world record holders and Olympic/World
champions. But then some people are easily led by a marketing spiel. >

I think Seb was over 14 for 5k.

He only ran it once 14.06 with no specific training and strolled round
    the track.

    achiever?

Hmmm... yes... During his -- what -- junior year in college? Wonder
how he'd have done in 1976...?

    OK, so let's see...

He was undefeated in cross-country and track through his junior and
senior year of high school. His senior year, he broke the American
    record for 2 miles...

He's the first athlete EVER to win the same event at the NCAA track and
field championships four consecutive years, winning the 5,000-meter
title in 1970, 1971, 1972 and 1973. He also won the NCAA cross-country
championship in 1970, 1971, and 1973. In fact, the only year he didn't
win it was the year he was away at the olympics. Oh, wait. Those
races didn't have any competition, drawing, as they did, on runners
from only 4000 colleges and universities...

Never mind. He also won the national 5,000-meter championship in 1971
and 1973. Oh wait. I forgot. That only made him the best 5000m
runner in a country of 225 million people...

I guess that doesn't seem very impressive in this day of jet-set elite
products of national sports programs, but back then... Not bad for a
hometown boy. Not bad at all...

Uh huh. And Michael Johnson could kick Coe's a$$ in the 400m, so
    what's your point?

Or maybe just a bad movie?

Hmmm... yes... in a race won by the blood-doping Lasse Viren, IIRC.

  11. Sorry Helix, but college stats and 'could have beens' dont count.
Give me the world/olympic championship stats ie. outside Oregon the
    world exists.
Maybe at Montreal he would have moved up to 10.000 - who knows?
My original complaint was that the Prefontaine film made me throw up
because it was a load of sickly [censored] heavily influenced by Nike.

  12. Never mind. He also won the national 5,000-meter championship in 1971

Oh, wow! Only thing is 80% of the population are burger chewing obese
[censored] who couldnt run to the toilet!
Sorry, I couldnt resist that one.
Have you ever been to Finland? The people are so slim - they eat fish
    ..
Ive heard this before, proper [censored] - we are the Godalmighty USA
and a doped up Finn beat us!

  13. Yeah, what a loser.

I could not find a 5000m time for Coe, but did find a site stating that he
ran a 2:48 marathon (just to give it a go).

Not sure of the reliability of data but this page says "well under 14:00
    without specific training"
    http://www.geocities.com/hotsprings/3257/coe.html

  16. I used that page as well as a couple of others and that is as close as I
came. Not reliable in my mind. "well under 14" is not very specific and
    with no competition results, questionable.
