  1. I don't eat or drink anything prior to my morning ride to work. Usual
routine is silence alarm, pull cycling gear on and head out the door.

Ride is about forty five minutes, that'll be going up to about an hour
tenish soon as I'm moving at the end of the month. Would I be better
off having a bite to eat before heading to work?

    Personal preference surely.
Unless after the ride you eat a large amount, then I don't see that it
is doing you any harm. Give the new ride a couple of weeks and see what
    your body tells you.

slice or 2 of toast should see you thru.
I hate eating too soon before (feel flat. especially if it involves milk. thanks for that tip Hip...) but early morning is time-poor so taost settles easy, nd its easy to do in semi-consciousness

  4. I consume a 500cal breakfast, regardless of what I'm going to do. Fruit,
cereal, juice, yoghurt, coffee. If I have a particularly intense commute,
then I like to have something after I've arrived at work, like one of those
Up and Go tetra packs. If I have to ride more than an hour, I'll be eating
in the saddle too. This leads me not into temptation, for there is a
canteen on the ground floor that has danish and donuts.

I take breakfast with me (as well as lunch and snacks for the day) so
temptation's not so much of a problem. Generally I'll sit down to some
muesli (home made stuff, not pre-prepared [censored]), a honey and peanut
butter sandwich and a banana. Between B'fast and lunch I'll have
    another banana and an apple.

About half an hour before home time, another banana. I like bananas :-)

    For my 1hr commute, I don't. YMMV 🙂

    Try before you buy.

Something along the lines of don't have milky stuff before a ride. 🙂

This kind of 'tip' is totally variable - some people just shouldn't have
milk before a ride and others don't notice any ill effects. Basically,
milk is one of those foods that seem to cause lots of people tummy
upsets when doing exercise after its consumption.

The negative effects are made worse when the intensity of the ride goes
up. So, I generally have vegemite toast before a race - milky cereal
would only be on the menu if there was a 'long' time between eating and
    racing.

I also read somewhere that performance suffered when athletes consumed
protein-based foods before exercise. I'd have to find that article again
    though.

As others have said I think it's a personal thing and I suggest you
experiment. Personally I can't ride with lots in the tum (it ends up on
the road), so on my commute to work, nothing before the ride, but food
up once I get there. I suppose I could be lucky as I can eat a bowl of
cereal while I sift through my Emails🙂 For long rides I stuff myself
the night before with carbs, then lots of little serves of carbs\fast
sugars (& an Espresso or 2) while out on the road.

My breakfast before daily commute (about 55 min or so) or before BR rides
(about 2 and a half hours or so) is: 6 to 8 Weetbix with Lite Milk and 4
slices of toast with marmalade (no butter). I am absolutely shocking if I
don't have food pretty well as soon as i wake up. I never have a problem
with food repeating on me so I guess that it is "each to their own".

whatever your body is used to, if you change your habits, your body wont like it initially, but will get used to it and deal with it, my personal preference is not too eat anything, thats just what I am used to..... 🙂 unless its a particularly longish ride then I might have something to eat but take it a bit easier to start, let it get digested....

if I do, it is usually toast+honey, if I am particularly rushed, a gel pack or an energy bar 🙂

Milk on cereals started causing me problems a few months back.
Problem is, I am too lazy to cook anything, and toast is
so... unappealing. So I just stick with the bare minimum milk I can
use to wet the cereal (why is dry cereal so bad?). Up until I left
home and started buying the milk myself, I was drinking almost two
litres of milk a day. I would still fill my bowl with milk even after
    that.

have you tried low/no fat milk as well or are they dirty words ?? its not quite as heavy to digest as full cream milk.... whats wrong with dry cereal ??? nothing if you can eat it.... wow I could not imagine trying to eat 3 weetbix with no milk.... that would be hard work.

It'd dry your mouth out a bit, wouldn't it?

Low fat anything is definitely a vile dirty word. But I might give it
    a try anyway...

    Freak :P

I don't buy milk any more. I got sick of buying it, making one milo and
the next time I wanted to use it it'd gone off!
I have Rev at work for the occasional cereal and/or coffee. I drink
loads of iced coffee to make up my calcium <cough> sugar requirements 🙂

While I'm crapping on about milk.. I haven't had full fat milk for 5+
years, not counting rare occasions when skinny milk is not an option.
Even so, I still avoid skim milk and iced coffee, etc before hard rides.
    It's just more comfortable sans-milk.

OJ is great on the right cereals. Never tried on cocopops but that would be jaffa.

At the international women's day fun run yesterday, donut king was
handing out free donuts before the race. I thought that was cute but ate
    a peach instead.

In general, nutritionists recommend starting on the
food-before/while-exercising thing slowly - start with weak sports
drink, graduate to a banana, move up to toast. I think you can't beat
peanut butter on toast. It's packed with fat and protein but it's never
been a problem for me. Had two before the gold coast half marathon last
year with no ill effects and a PB by 15 minutes.
