Experience of cycling, however, is not one of them. Make of that what you

World Domination? Just find a world that's into that kind of
thing, then chain to the floor and walk up and down on it in
    high heels.

I don't see why a good job of managing a cycling project couldn't be done
    by, say, a well-informed non-cyclist in a wheelchair.

As long as that person is at least an ex-cyclist. Without that knowledge
it would be a very difficult task. Or perhaps you would also say that
(for example) a French Teacher doesn't need to speak French?

Don't laugh! French or another modern language is now on most primary
schools' curriculum. Non-French speakers are now required to teach
French. I'm lucky. I speak a very small amount of French, but one of
my parents is French and she comes in for an hour a week to teach
French to my Year 1 class. I still have to teach singing....

Aye. Admittedly my skills are more technical, but I was paid more
than that *before* the whopping increase they gave me to tempt me to
    work in the smoke.

Yes. 45K to manage a budget of £140,000,000 over three years ain't a
    lot.

It also makes me laugh that the job is based in London, when London
isn't entitled to a penny of that cash. £500,000,000 is London's
equivalent dollop of cash. I bet Veena and Rose at TfL's Centre of
Cycling Excellence get paid more than £45,000 per annum.

This is a political job, so one of the requirements is that the person
who gets it, knows nothing about the subject. After all, we have had
countless government ministers who don't know what they are talking about.

French teachers are often managed by non French teachers....

Come on Tom you can hardly claim to be surprised by the range of curriculum
subjects you are expected to teach. If you wanted to teach a single subject
specialism you'd have trained/aimed to teach in a high school :-)

But will they pay travel expenses to get to the interview? I could

That's truely mad. You're lucky to be able to coop your mother. My
first French teachers were anglophones but at least they spoke fluent
    French.

I am trying to visualise Joe Blow teaching Intro Russian to the 9 year
    olds. 🙂

I'd say that a head teacher doesn't need to speak every language taught
by every teacher on their staff in order to be able to manage them,
which is rather more relevent. Someone who was going to teach cycling
should have cycling experience, but that's not what they are looking for.

All else being equal, a candidate with more cycling experience is likely
to be better, but maybe they also thought that went without saying.

Time to check the last minute sales. I might just make it. Bad time
to be heading to the right side of the pond for cheap seats though.
