As I was doing a bit of maintenance on the FS ride this afternoon, I noticed
a clicking sound associated with the chain passing over the rings. Upon
closer examination I noticed one of the sideplates on the 9sp powerlink was
horribly bent. I tried several means to remove it, but ended up having to
pop a pin and install a new chain.
I distinctly remember a bizarre episode of chain suck last weekend. This is
a rare occurance and is usually a sign that it's time to lube up again. I'm
wondering if the chainsuck episode was a result of the bent sideplate or was
the cause. The powerlink was the only damaged link on the chain so I
suspect that it failed first and caused the chainsuck problem. Either that
or it's just coincidence that the powerlink was the one part of the chain
that took the brunt of the abuse.
I've been using SRAM chains w/ the powerlink for years and never had one
fail before. Any similar experiences or comments?
