I generally agree with what you say. But ALL of my training is indoors, and my trainer has power measurement (maybe not totally accurate, but it provides the comparable effect you refer to. EG I thought I was ill the other day because my power output was down, and then found I had a rubbing brake...). So, I'm training with power. However, I really wanted to race with power, but for the reasons I've mentioned, I've decided that it is an expensive luxury, even if I could get it to work reliably
