I spent a lot of time at the front which explains the relative lack of surges and the proximity of the average power to the normalized power. I ended up opening up a gap over the final turns so there wasn't much of a sprint finish which was good because my handlebars came loose about halfway through the event which prevented me from doing any standing/sprinting (I was too scared it would cause the bars to swing forward and I'd end up on the ground).

Heh. The elbow flick works fine during a break, but not when you're just sitting on the front of the pack. The reason the pace slowed so much at times was because everyone else was waiting to see who was going to go to the front and work. If someone does, then all is good. If not, then the pace will slow way down until someone decides to attack. The same thing happens when someone's trying to get off the front. If you don't want to work on the front, you have to be patient and wait for someone else to attack.

It was indeed smooth compared to the other race I did. The slinky effect of being on the back is really obnoxious so staying at or near the front was much more suited to my training (or, rather, my lack of sprint interval training).
