Power breathing device, recommendations.

  1. I am considering using a breathing device to assist in my training regime. Has anyone out there used one of these devices and if so have it helped. Cheers Terry.😄

  2. I have experience in working with Spirotiger. I work with professional cyclists and I bought a bunch of them for several pros with a discount price. I have 2 left and are brend new and still in the box (never opened).

    The brand is www.spirotiger.com you can get info there and some links to physiological studies. This machine supposely increases the strenth of resiratory muscles and could decrease oxigen utilisation by them. It is calculated that at maximum or near-maximum intensities respiratory muscles could take up to 15% of VO2, which I believe it is less than that, but anyways by strengthening respiratory muscles they would be less fatigued and utilize less oxygen at high end efforts.

    As far as experience with pros, they seem to tell a bit of a difference when performing high intensity workouts in terms of less fatigue in the respiratory muscles.

    I was working for a Pro Tour team this year and one of the distibutors came to our training camp to show us the device and I purchased a bunch of them at a very good price but I should have purchased less..since now I have 2 left and I want to sell them.

    I bought a similar device 3 years ago, but I don't use it anymore. I couldn't find any definitive study to justify using it. I think that interval training provides the most appropriate training of breathing muscles. The word "specificity" comes to mind.

    You used the word "seem", so I'll use some other examples of things "seeming". Low cadence intervals will make 80 RPM's seem like spinning. Tai Chi is said to give people more energy. It's to be expected that normal movements seem fast and energetic after moving at half-speed for a prolonged period of time. Holding one's breath also makes subsequent breaths seem deeper than they are.

    That's just my two cents. If there's some shred of proof that I didn't waste my money I'm all ears, but I'm afraid that discussion could go the way of our Powercranks discussions -- believers vs. non-believers.
