Hi,
I have a recipe calling for 2 tsp of powdered mustard but
can't get any at this moment. Can I do anything with regular
to substitute? I have never used powdered before to know the
difference.
Thanks Ben

I wouldn't. Regular - sometimes called prepared - mustard
is made from the powdered stuff plus other ingredients,
such as vinegar, sugar, and spices. It will give a
different flavor. I suppose, depending on the recipe, it
might be OK. Would a vinegar taste throw things off? If
not, then go ahead and try it.

Most likely not. Mustard powder is pretty potent stuff. The
prepared mustard has been toned down .... a lot.

Powdered mustard is much stronger than "regular" mustard,
that's if you mean hot dog mustard. You could probably
use half the amount of a hot mustard, but I'm not sure
about that.

Try subbing 1 Tablespoon hotdog mustard to each1 teaspoon
powdered. Reduce liquid in recipe to compensate.

Nice to meet you to. I skipped the dried mustard and will

Well then, you could easily use regular mustard....

:-)Then substituting prepared mustard is acceptable (which is
what I believe Sheldon was getting at).Use the sharpest mustard in your inventory.
Thanks. Aside from his interesting manner I realised that he
knew what he was talking about.
Thanks again. Ben

IMHO a Dijon mustard would probably be the closest. American
yellow mustard has a lot of vinegar and turmeric which masks
the mustards natural "bitter/sharp" flavor.

I think that powdered mustard is just mustard that is
dehydrated so it is more potent. Next time I would just use
a heavy concentration of
it.

Not exactly. You can make mustard by adding water to mustard
powder to make a paste and letting it sit for a while to
develop flavour. The stuff that people buy for hot dogs and
hamburgs is Prepared Mustard. It is a paste made from ground
mustard seed and/or mustard flour and/or mustard cake mixed
with vinegar, salt and sugar.
