Potential wheel-rim failure

  1. Hi all,

    I have a Specialized Sirrus "road" bike (flat bars, 700c road wheels,
    V-brakes) which is fitted with Alexrims AT400 rims.

    These have a line machined into them which is designed to show that the
    rim
    has worn out. The line is 0.3mm deep and when it has disappeared it is
    time
    to replace the rim. Indeed the line on the back wheel has now
    disappeared
    after only 2,300 miles of use and I have recently noticed that the rear

    brakes are very spongy in spite of being correctly adjusted. In the
    same
    amount of time I have only gone through 2 sets of brake pads and have
    not
    even replaced the rear tyre yet although it is fairly worn.

    2 questions:

    1) Is it normal for the rim to wear almost as fast as the pads in this
    way?
    What is the usual expected life for a rim of this type when using
    V-brakes?
    Personally I would have expected it to last rather longer!

    2) Should I just wait for the rim to fail totally before buying a new
    wheel,
    or do these things often fail catastrophically when used with high
    pressure
    road bike tyres. I've had an MTB rim fail before and that went quite
    slowly
    and not particularly dangerously...

    Would appreciate any input as I am currently riding round with severe
    paranoia waiting for something to go ping.

    Any ideas for replacement 700c rims with a longer life with V-brakes?

    If you're prepared to pay, ceramic ones won't wear in this way.

    Don't wait too long. If it does go, it may well go with a big bang. I
    had a front rim failure due to wear a few years ago. I had about 3
    seconds warning from the rim bulging and banging on the brake blocks,
    to 4 inch shards of outer rim and bits of tube & tyre flying across the
    road. I'm glad I hadn't quite got to the top of the climb I was doing
    as the bit on the other side is usually good for 40 mph!

    It depends largely on the conditions you've used them in, but rims
    definitely wear out.

    Yes, they can fail with a big bang and a sudden cessation of wheel
    rotation. Ask me how I know. You don't need to replace the whole wheel.
    You can fairly easily transfer a new rim onto the existing hub and
    spokes as long as the ERD is reasonably close to that of the existing
    one.

    That's not paranoia, it's justified anxiety although "ping" is not
    really the sound effect I have in mind. If the rim starts to bulge
    while you're out riding let most of the air out of the tyre and limp
    home. But really you should change your rim now as you may not get this
    warning.

    I'm using Rigida Chrinas from Spa Cycles at the moment. Recommended by
    the extremely high mileage Steve Abraham and one or two other audaxers,
    but I can't say how well they'll stand up to V-brakes.

    No, absolutely not.

    I suggest you need to look at why they wore out so quickly in the first
    place. Something is not right there.

    Are you using the rear brake too much? If you ride a lot in the wet you
    can expect fairly rapid rim wear on the back as you will tend to use the
    rear brake more in slippery conditions, and a wet rim accumulates
    abrasive gritty sludge. If however you've been riding mostly in the dry
    you would expect more wear on the front, which provides much more
    effective stopping power.

    Are you using the rear brake too much? If you ride a lot in the wet you
    can expect fairly rapid rim wear on the back as you will tend to use the
    rear brake more in slippery conditions, and a wet rim accumulates

    This question is reminiscent of one that I posted a while back. If I was a
    rim manufacturer, I would add a *huge* safety margin after the wear
    indicators started to show, both to avoid litigation and to encourage
    punters to spend money on new rims sooner than they need to. Both my LBS and
    I agree that there seems to be loads of use left in my T224s, despite the
    little holes having started to appear.

    Yes, moderately. I've certainly had rims that I'd done 50k miles on which
    were not knackered when stolen. And I've certainly never gone through a
    rim in as little as 10k miles. Maybe I don't brake very much.

  12. Thanks for all your answers. I suspect the actual mileage you get must
    depend on lots of factors such as hilliness and the type of local grit
    as well as if you ride in the wet or the dry. I'm sure that how
    expensive the rim is must also play a big part, but I would have
    thought that if you can get more than 10K miles out of a rim you should
    be doing extremely well! My previous rim failure was an MTB rim after
    ~3,500 miles!!

    I ride quite a lot in the wet & all year round as the bike is also
    used for commuting, I also have a tendency to ride fast and brake hard
    for the many junctions on my way to work. A lot of my riding is on
    country lanes and these tend to be quite sandy / gritty. The brake
    blocks I have are cartridge V-brake ones from Aztec I think, and they
    are set up properly and stop very effectively. I can't see that there
    is anything wrong with the setup.

    I will seriously consider replacing the rim after hearing the tales of
    rim shrapnel flying everywhere, but I think it will have to wait until
    after this weekend as I am doing the 65mile Oxford Big Bike ride -
    sponsored ride from Blenheim palace this Sunday...

    'Fraid so. I'm hoping the current Rigidas will last a bit longer than
    the 2 Ambrosio Evolutions and the Mavic MA3 I've got through in the
    last 12 months.

    Yup, it's just possible, isn't it? I have to confess that since the crash
    my descending is a little less 'get into a tuck and see what we can
    really wind this thing up to' than it used to be. But on the whole air
    drag usually does enough to slow me down on road hills - to a speed I'm
    comfortable with, anyway.

    I always used to use the excuse that I might be [censored] at climbing, but I
    could make it up on the descents. Not true, any more, if it ever was.

    It is. The MA3 went out of true when one of the spoke nipples started
    to pull through the surface of the rim. One of the Evolutions developed
    a large bulge in the sidewall on the way to the York rally last year,
    and the other exploded spectacularly on the Severn Bridge a couple of
    months ago. Luckily I was going slowly at the time. A couple of hours
    earlier I'd been descending at a whisker under 50 mph.

  18. What sort of brake blocks are you using?

    Some sorts are soft and get bits of road grit stuck in them. These then
    machine bits of aluminium of the rims which then get stuff in the blocks and
    start a vicious circle.

    Salmon kool stops don't do this. The shimano tiagra ones that came on my
    bike did.
