Posting a bike in U.K

I checked some of this out earlier this year and you have to watch out for a
couple of things
- for bike size boxes, all the companies charge by the volume of the box
(and this gets expensive)
- most LBS are happy to let you have their old bike boxes
- some couriers charge more for deliveries north of Glasgow/Edinburgh and
all (I found) for deliveries north of Inverness.
- watch out for extra costs to anywhere off the mainland

I was going to use APC Overnight as the courier (luckily my ebay buyer
collected instead) and it would have cost £43 to any mainland destination
south of Inverness.

Amtrak charged £30.00 went on overall lenght rather than weight

I used to work at a bike shop, we posted bikes by ParcelFarce - cost us
about £8 a bike for picked-up, tracked delivery - now assuming
non-account customers pay 100% more, thats still only a £16ish? PF
also pickup for free from most locations as opposed to some others.

Times change. £16 is the going rate to ship a pair of 170cm/7.5Kg skis.
Parcel Force won't even do this for normal punters because they have a 150cm
maximum length limit (but this doesn't apply to some businesses.) For bike
boxes, the couriers that will take them apply a volumetric weight equivalent
and it becomes bloody expensive. £40+ is the norm unless you disassemble
the bike which may bring the cost down a bit - but not to £16.

:o this was only last September! To be honest you are best stripping it
apart and packing the bits semi-seperately anyway, damage occurs during
shipping due to the odd shapes and sizes. Take it along to a bike shop
and ask them if they'd post it for you for cost plus a fiver.
