Do you tell them not to do it because they might get hurt?

When did I ever tell anybody _\"NOT_ to do it"? There's a clear
difference (at least to *most* people) between *asking* a question, or
suggesting that someone be careful, wear protection, (which I also
didn't do in this thread) and telling them _Not_ to do something. I was
mostly showing concern, not telling him *not* to do it. Here, let me
    quote myself from above:

You didn't tell him not to ride; you told him not to ride fast.

  5. I kind of agree with MuniAddict (Terry is it?) here, he never really
told anyone not to ride so fast. To me it does sound kind of
dissaproving but that's what sucks about the internet, you can easily
interpret someone wrongly. Why would you ride so fast? Ehm, the easy
explanation must be adrenaline, my max speed is something like 24.5
miles an hour and when you're going that fast it is amazing.
Riding a bicycle is also less dangerous than riding a unicycle, yet you
do it as well, if you feel comfortable and under control at such a
speed I don't see the problem. However I don't think peaks are that
important, max speeds are just max speeds. Of course there's an
increase in risk when you ride faster than what you can run out of, but
rolling out of something is quite easy and not so painful either. Zack
Baldwin gapping from meter high skinny to meter high skinny or Kevin
McMullin risking his jewels on handrails doesn't seem to bother anyone.

. . . If you fall off the back, you're already in a position that's
leaning backwards ready to decelerate yourself so you don't have to
sustain the high speed run out for very long. The deceleration
naturally brings you back to an upright balance in the process, so
    you're left standing.

Exactly so. Just last night I was coming down a gentle hill at pretty
decent rpm's with 102 mm cranks (don't know how fast - but pretty
fast). Some odd bump/distraction/? caught me up and I fell backward at
a rare angle - I swear I must have been nearly 45 degrees to the road
surface. I sustained a terrific jolt in my knees and hips but managed
to maintain balance. I came to 0 mph -after only a few steps- following
this momentum-killing initial landing. I felt very lucky though my
knees hurt for a mile or so after remounting (this morning they seem
    fine).
