  1. Ah yes, in the midst of becoming a full-time (temporary) poseur and sitting at Starbucks drinking
latte's while I wait for my strained MCL to heal up, I decided to ride my barcalounger boinger DH
bike into the village of Babylon. I couldn't find a Starbucks anywhere in the village. Lots of clam
bars, Mexican food restaurants, Italian restaurants and fish houses...but no Starbucks. I felt very
displaced in this hopping mad little village by the South Shore...how can such a place exist without
a Starbucks? I slowly pedalled my bike to the Bay to go watch the sailboats drift by in my attempt
to crush this disappointment that I was facing...

The nearest Starbucks was too far for me to ride, the strain was beginning to act up. I gave up on
my attempt of achieving poseur-dom and went home and ate ravioli's instead...

Back when you were Canadian you would have pedaled 15 km on one leg to get to Tim Horton's.

I'm waiting to recover from the same problem. I keep trying to cycle to see if it's any better but
find out the hard way that it's not.

I can't wait to get back on a proper ride. Hope you recover soon.

Are they as good as folks say? I finally tried a crispy creme and it was not anything worth all the fuss. Being a true fan of the donut I was greatly disapointed by the crispy hoax. I'm up in B.C. in a couple of months, is the Horton's a must?

Heal quick Carla. My PT keeps insisting she will keep me off my bike into the spring (destroyed another shoulder). Come on Snowboard season!

I had the same thought. We have no Starbuck's here either. I see that as a good thing. We have three
other non-chain coffee shops and those are cooler anyway.

It hurts like a sonofabitch. I went for a ride on Saturday and I couldn't make it back to the
trailhead. I had to stop at a supermarket parking lot and wait while Jim rode back to the trailhead
to get the truck and came back to pick me up.

Luckily there is a Starbucks diagonally across the street from my precinct, that gives free fill-ups
to officers in uniform who have purchased Strabucks mugs or thermos (good free advertising and the
steady flow of oinkers keeps them from getting robbed ;-) So, every morning, I sit out on the patio
at 06:00 to 06:15 sipping my latte and watching the sun rise over the city.

They're everywhere here. I have two within a mile of my house, and I live in the 'burbs. We have one
in the building I work in. Depending on the route I take on my 8-mile commute (and I'm not talking
out-of-the way routes), I could pass within a block of three others as well.

I guess thats a benefit of living in a west-coast town with bad weather.

I agree. But I think we differ on weather or not that's good.

I like going to Starbucks after a ride with our mud covered bikes sitting on my hitch rack and watch
the posers sitting around sipping their java with their squeaky clean suvs parked nearby watch as a
bunch of us covered head to toe in mud fall out my car.

They don't get it. The secret to life is living the life, not pretending to live the life.

Seattle may have invented drive thru espesso, but Spokane perfected it.

I think I like "the shop" best... live music on weeknights, and in the summer they show movies on
the wall of the old building ( painted white) next door, for free, bring a lawn chair and buy a
latte. And a really good sound system.

Is there a Steaming Bean in Gunny? It is becoming a requirement for me to visit other

Heh... reminds me of this Simpsons episode where the camera was panning left and right in a shopping
mall background, and initially there was just one Starbux but more kept popping up.

hm.. not very funny now that i've typed it out.

A couple years ago there was a New Yorker cartoon where there was a Starbucks built into a men's
room. BTW: The universe must end at the triangle of Astor Place, NYC, where there are, indeed,
two Starbucks across the street from eachother. /s

I'm reading "Good to Great" right now at work, and they describe Walgreen's strategy of maximizing
profit per customer rather than profit per store. The idea is that you identify a region where
your services are desired, and then you put so many stores in that area that no matter where a
person is, your store is the most convenient choice. Eventually "I'm going to the drugstore"
    becomes "I'm going to Walgreen's."

    Non-intuitive, but apparently profitable.

Sounds like Starbucks is doing something similar.

Sounds like the NYPD's attitude towards NYC cyclists too. Although their ticket writing campaigns
are slightly more proactive about maximizing their profits per customer.
