Thanks to my New! IMPROVED! Popout Map (As Seen On URC), I got from Paddingtown to St Mary Axe (helpfully labelled Swiss Re Tower, aka The Gherkin) with only one minor and short-lived deviation. I have also I think finally cracked the secret of navigating in London: ignore the little roads!

I have never been able to follow a signposted cycle route through London. I always either get lost because the relevant sign post is missing or in 1 inch high letters on a sticker on a pole for a different street sign, or I get fed up with so much arsing about and deviation that I just get on the main roads anyway.
Rule of thumb: Every left turn effectively adds 20m to the ride. Every right turn 100m. Every get off and walk, 200m.

When I started commuting between Twickenham and Sutton I noticed that route 75 ran that way. I decided to try it out and it became a personal challenge to follow it without resorting to maps. It took me 3 weeks of almost daily attempts before I finally managed to work out where it all was and follow it completely in both directions. Mission accomplished I went back to the sensible route, saving about 20 minutes each way.

And no-one can legally follow the Trans-Pennine trail going west through Northenden (south of Manchester), because it goes the wrong way down a one way street. And that street has been one way, in that direction, for the 30 years I've lived in the area..... -- Love is the triumph of imagination over intelligence.
