The geographically widespreadedness of this group, as it stands, means it wouldn't really be
feasible would it? Theres already a fairly hefty dose of posts every day to sift through, I'd rather
not have to read about a fork for sale in alabama.

If I have an item I wanted to sell, I'd rather first give the readers of this NG a crack at it
before I went to the trouble and expense of placing it on ebay. Conversely, I appreciate the
opportunity others extend us by doing the same. I believe the messages for personal items are good
and on topic. Yes, there is another marketplace group but I doubt many people read it as often as
this if at all.

But it doesn't really matter, Bomba. It's an unmoderated newsgroup and people will post anything
they want. Resulting commentary only increase the noise level. Most people eventually figure out if
they don't agree with the content a message it's better to just go on to the next.

I dont say its ok to sell parts in here, i dont find it very interesting to read about a nice
bargain in the states. Since this is a group with readers from all around the globe, it should be as

I don't mind when someone (read: a regular) "just happens to mention" they have something for sale,
but don't like seeing "FS" and "FA" posts when there's a group specifically set up for those.

In general I don't mind, expecially if there was some indication in the subject that there were
selling something. My real concern would be that every post in r.b.marketplace was duplicated here.

It's an alt group. There's nothing to stop OT posts, and I don't mind them coming from the regs. OT
stuff from people who don't contribute (ERPaul springs to mind) is obviously frowned upon.

I think this is what people disagree with. When you say 'n00b', you're talking about somebody who
doesn't contribute to the group in any other way except to sell his wares. IMO, this falls in to the
unknown posting OT.

And, I agree with Sorni, in that I have no problems with the regs offering up their bits and pieces
on the odd occasion.

I think it sounds a little cliquey, but those are my thoughts.

1. Its a silly thing to get worked up about, especially given that this is an alt group with a lot
of off-topic posts.

2. Even if there were a concensus (and there won't be), people will still get worked up about it.

3. If anyone has MTB stuff to sell, they'll probably have more luck putting it on eBay and posting a
link here, rather than posting it on a NG full of roadie parts. They'll just have to ignore all

I vote no for FS of course, but yes for a friendly attitude to ALL persons in the group. Everybody
deserves a chance...

I've seen "regulars" post them and it's no problem. Newbs do it and get [censored] on.

It only makes sense that if you have a mountain bike or parts you want to unload that you would ask
the mountain bikers if they're interested. Commercial ads, no. Private party, yes. As long as
they're FS/FA in the subject line. Those who detest such ads can simply set their filters for FS/FA
and be done with it. For those who don't put FS/FA in the subject line, give 'em hell.

Hmmm.. seeming to have stirred up a hornets nest of opinion, I guess that I can offer mine.

I posted my bike here originally because I thought it to be a group that would have a better idea of
what I was talking about then some guy just looking for a bike with big tires... I would rather
offer a better deal to someone that would appreciate it than not... (opinions on make and model
excluded).

When I look through any newsgroup, I view the headers.. if I see something I'm interested in, I read
it, if not, I move on.. That would seem a simple solution to me, perhaps too simple for some.

The thing I would worry most about is that this group would become as cluttered as marketplace is...
I would not want to see that. This still needs to be a forum for discussion without having to wade
through 3 feet of [censored] to do it.

I've seen it discussed that oldies get to do it, and noobs cannot.. I think that is chickenshit and
elitist at best... if one person is allowed, then everyone should be allowed.. if not, Where do you
sign up for credentials? Who will determine who does and who does not get to post? What kind of
message will that send to new people thinking of becoming regulars here? If you say something that
pisses off one of the "chosen", will a noob be blacklisted and not ever get to participate? Too many
bad things happen in a divided system.

So, to sum it all up, I guess it would be best to not allow posting of for sale or auction items
here.. Another newsgroup could be created just for mountain biking parts and bikes for sale.

And then there is the question of off topic posting in here... should something be said or done
about that? a different hornets nest maybe...
