So Tony Blur has sent conratulations and is offering to wine and dine the ruby team.

Ok so they won the match, but what about others who have succeeded in their sport Nicole Cooke,
David millar et al.

Or is it just cos there was more media coverage and more potential votes in being seen with a
rugby team?

Nothing to do with them being the "England" rugby team and not the "British" rugby team would it?
Let's face it, "Brits" win loads of stuff "England" virtually nothing.

Well at least after 37 years Bobby Moore can be retired ;-)

Rugby normally has incredibly low TV viewing figures, but the fans are all ABC1s so the
advertisers love it.

Weren't the BRITISH Olympic team invited round for tea & buns -- including a Scottish Women's
Curling team, Welsh sprinters and triple jumpers, and rowers of various stripes?

Politicians are media whores. A winning rugby team -- extensively covered on TV -- are more
photogenic than individual cyclists who may not even he household names in their own street.

Its sad -- but true. Its the cult of celebrity.

You've forgotten the rules. We're only allowed to claim our sportspeople if they lose. If they win,
they're automatically British.

When I read the original post, I have to say I didn't read it as anyone trying to claim Nicole or
David as English. But rather as people from Britain (the Welsh & Scots part in the case of Nicole
& David) who *have* got to the top of their tree in thier chosen sport, but simply and entirely
possibly due to the fact their chosen sport isn't recognised in the British press as being
anything of note, that there is little PR value to No10 in inviting them to dinner. Hence the
hypocracy of No.10.

After all, even the English are from Britain, and B.Liar is a Scot (born in Edinburgh). So what say
you, perhaps we have a Scot trying to claim the English rugby team for Scotland ;-)

But according to all the pundits, the last time England won a major world title was...... you
guessed it ;-)

The Rugby League World Cup was contested by only 4 or 5 teams until 2000 with the Kangaroos unbeaten
since '72. Not quite on the same level as the football or RU WCs.

Please do. As far as I know Someone called Webb picked the ball up and ran with it. Presumably with
the idea of getting into the opponents goal with it.

Unfortunately one code has decided to have the games decided by kickers in an endless penalty
shoot out.

Whilst the other remains true to Webb.

Quite, it's only southern halfwits who could be so prejudiced.

And AFAIK, the current rugby (union, I'd suppose) olympic champions are the USA. I'm quite prepared

Ah ha! An excellent reminder that I should never underestimate just how seriously some people will
take almost anything.

I am most grateful to you.

If their exploits had been followed by millions on TV, their successes trumpetted from the front and
back pages of every newspaper and their bandwagon jumped on by every media outlet in the country,
then yes, like every other England/GB/UK team with world medals, they would be similarly feted.

But cycling is a minority sport in the UK, let's face it - it's a minority form of transport - let
alone something to inspire the masses. But it would surprise me if, for example, Boardman hadn't
been given that kind of reception in his time and, post-Sydney, while Jason Queally's medal wasn't
the highest profile, he won't have been ignored.

There are only some sports which command this sort of response and it isn't necessarily those at
which we are most successful. There are dozens of rowers, sailors, shooters, even darts, snooker,
anglers, badminton players and numerous others with world titles - often won in the face of much
stiffer opposition than the Rugby Union team. (Without denegrating their acheivements, there were
only ever going to be 3 or 4 winners of that tournament, which are pretty good odds if you're one of
that select.)

But yes, it is all about votes and public image and Jonny Wilkinson is the flavour de jour (and
plays for a club reasonably local to Tony Blair's constituency) ....

David Millar is about as Scottish as I am. Strictly speaking, he's Malta's hottest cyclist.

<<<To be honest, I don't know what nationality I am because I was born in Malta, my family is
Scottish and I was brought up in Hong Kong, and my mother is in London.>>>

Had a big row with a (Scottish) guy on a forum about this during last year's Tour. The guy didn't
even follow cycling, just suffered from a massive chip on his shoulder.

You'd be quite entitled to a failing memory since they won the title in Paris in 1924 !!

I don't think that two different codes existed then
