Jaywalking patrol? They can park on double red lines around here (to get
their milk and bread), so that's normal. The time I came across a copper
using his radio to ask what they wanted from the shop was farcical.

I've only seen the odd one, probably see 1 every year in Nottingham. They don't ride anything half decent from what I have seen, just one of those grandville delivery type of bikes as seen on 'open all hours' tv show.

They probably only use them to get around locally.

Met two of the local police on bikes at the Southampton Boat show. They were
on specials supplied by J.E.James - weighed a ton and had front sus; which
interestingly neither of them were terribly enthused about (the weight or
the suspension!)

In London, saw one on a high spec Stumpjumper, In Chicago, Cannondales with very flash wheels.

I used to see them wobbling along University Boulevard quite frequently. I
never saw one who looked terribly comfortable on his bike, though.

Ours use the bus lanes on the pretext that they are "patrolling" them.

Do they actually do anything? If so, what? Apart from give directions to
pedestrians?

Cops in cars can give chase to baddies in cars, but I can't imagine a
bicycle cop outsprinting another cyclist on a road bike who's just
jumped a red light, for instance.

Interesting. The ones I see in south Manchester patrol in pairs. Sometimes
they go extremely slowly - I overtook a pair and I was only doing 10mph.
I've seen them pull over and have a word with pavement cyclists several
times, so it would seem that they are trying to discourage it.

The bike police in London seem to use either Cannondales
or Smith+Wesson police bikes.
I might be wrong, but it seems to be the City police on
the Smith+Wessons.

If you want to see a lot of police on bikes, come along to
Critical Mass tonight. A large contingent always turns out.

TVP haven't suggested (TIKO) that police on bikes are to police
cyclists, but that they're a more mobile form of foot patrol. Reading
has lots of problems with Yoof in areas where cars can't go - alleys on
estates, that sort of thing.

The City Police seem to regularly ticket red-light jumping cyclists. They
also, apparently, do chase down cars as well at times - there was an article
in, I think, an LCC mag a few issues ago. They admit to a few cycle chases,
not all of which are successful, and which, where there's a catch, leave
both parties 'breathless'. The point is though, it's easier to draft than
to lead, and just because you can jump one red it doesn't mean you can pass
them all. I think you'd have to be very good and very lucky to escape a
chase, and you'd be risking a larger fine if you tried.

In Tokyo almost all the cyclists ride on the pavements, seeing a bike
as a kind of extended pedestrain, but the cycle cops, on heavy bikes
with considerable police communications equipment, cycle on the
roads. I asked why, and was told that the reason was that their target
was cars, not bikes. And why have police bikes rather than cars? I was
told you needed both, because it often happens in the city that a
police bike can get somewhere, such as an accident scene, faster than
a police car, and they can in general in crowded parts of the city
deal with sequences of minor accidents, parking offences, disputes,
etc., faster than a car because they also have no parking problems.

When on holiday in Bordeaux, I saw a couple of cycling policeman. Something

Yes, guns and bikes seem to go together - 'sall tubes, innit? BSA,
Royal Enfield and Manufrance are others that spring to mind.
