I've been using a 710 now for almost 2 years, and some
positioning experience from my 2 bikes (I move the computer
from one bike to the other, and each bike has it's own set
of speed/cadence sensors)....
- The bike mount for the computer is just to the right
of my stem.
- The speed sensor is on the right side of the fork,
pointing forward from the fork, about 4 inches down from
the crown (some frame materials like Ti could obstruct
signal, as could all of the cables and brake HW).
- Cadence sensor is on the downtube, also pointed toward the
rear, on the "left side", with the magnet about 2.5 inches
from the end of the left crank. It juts out a bit from the
frame, but it does not get in the way of anything, and I
noticed to get a good reading on the cadence, the sensor
has to be really close to the crank magnet. (basically,
make sure the lettering on the sensors is on the
"outside", away from the frame side...)
As other posters have said, the light just indicates the
sensor is picking up the magnet passing by.
You need to see if you have autostart on, and if so, when it
starts picking up the speed sensor, it will kick on the
ride/stopwatch timer. Note that the cadence sensor will not
start the timers (at least on the 710, not sure about the
720). Otherwise you need to hit the big red button a second
time, to start the timers.
My best suggestion for you is to just play with it on the
work stand and spin the wheel after you see the lights,
perhaps even without the computer mounted (holding it near
the handlebar, for example), to see if you can get a speed
reading. (Also, did you set your wheel measurements?)
I also noticed that if I moved the computer to the left
side of the stem, I don't get as good signal reception. Not
quite sure why this would be, but on the right side of the
stem, I have no complaints. Maybe it's because I'm right
handed? <grin>
Hope this helps....

Quoted message said:An update for all...
1) I've measured all distances applicable (magnet to
reciever, recieved to hrm the supplied bike mount) and
all measurements are within the specified limits
2) I've got the speed sensor directly under the brakes, as
close as possible to the hrm location. I've got the
cadence sensor on the non-drive side down tube directly
below the my Tacx water bottle mounts.
3) I've defined bike 1 & bike 2 and have selected bike 1.
4) I'm pretty sure I set the autostart feature 'ON' but I
will check again.
I will try again when I get home - thanks for all your
help everyone!
