  1. I am looking to get the Polar s720i but am finding it difficult to see what displays are possible. if anyone has this model or a similar one could you tell me?

Basically I want to be able to see: Speed, Cadence, and Heart rate at the same time on a single screen is this possible?

There appear to be 3 or 4 different readings visible at the same time is it possible to program what each of these displays?

Also what happens when you leave the bike for a while does it reset everything or can you continue with your exercise when you've had your pee break/carb loading?

    All help gratefully received

    regards

Yes, that's possible with cadence on the top row, speed in the middle and HR in the bottom.

Yes, to some extent. There are a few restrictions, e.g. you can't put cadence in the middle, and HR must always be at the bottom.

You can leave the bike for up to half an hour (for the 710i/720/725) or 5 minutes (original 710) without any sensor inputs before it'll reset back to normal watch mode.

There is a good deal at www.xpedia.co.uk at the moment 🙂

Which BTW is not a big deal since the s720 can store multiple exercise files (versus a single one in the lesser models, which would wipe out what one just did).

So if the break is > 30 minutes, it's ok to just stop it.

If you are buying new, these guys have very good pricing and fantastic service (I had to exchange a defective unit): www.heartratemonitorsusa.com

    Thanks for that.

I just ordered the HRM and cadence sensor from simplysports.co.uk for 4 ukp less than expedia and they've refunded the full VAT back cos I live in the Channel Islands, no charge for delivery either. Should be here tommorrow with a bit of luck.

    Thanks all

  8. Well it arrived yesterday and was put on the bike last night, its nice not having any cables around but the sensors are a bit chunky, I guess thats the batteary etc.

It took a bit of time to find the best place for the cadence sensor as I didn't like the suggested position, in the end I put it on the down tube.

I'll try it out in anger tommorrow.

  9. Now you've got to learn how to use it! I've had mine a few weeks and still learning.

Have fun, and lets share the learning.

    That's a great idea, a Polar sub-forum. I got my 725 3 weeks ago and it's still a challenge. 😉

  11. I'm curious, does this model or any of the polar models also keep track of elevation gained?

    Yes, the 720 does.

...as do all the others with the altimeter built in. The models of which escape me right now. I think it's the S610 and up, but don't quote me on that. 🙂

  14. Well I did my first two rides with the s720i fitted over the weekend.

I had a few problems finding a place to put the monitor itself, its quite big and my bars have cyclocross brakes fitted. I managed by using an extender, The strap is difficult to get tight so I put some closed cell foam behind the monitor to pad it out a bit.

The display is very clear and read-able in most lights so far, I had no problems with dodgy readings from the sensors, although the cadence is a little slow to react initially it seems ok in use. The speed seemed to be as responsive as my other cycle computers.

The graphs are amazing! I found it quite easy to see where I had been on my ride and tracking my HR against altitude was useful ( I am going to the Pyrenees in 3 weeks ) I am now trying to work out my optimum cadence when climbing. It seems to be about 75rpm my cadence on the flat is around 95.

Another thing I noticed on a ride last week was that I don't work as hard into the wind as I think. With a tail wind my HR is up around 155 - 160, into the wind despite the fact that I 'think' its a slog my HR drops to around 130, I guess its a psychological (sp?) thing.
