  1. Well, I finally took the fit test on my Polar S720i and got a VO2max value
of 55, which is considerably higher than the default 35 that they suggested
    for women.

My calorie usage during my last century about 2 weeks ago (av sp 16.5'ish)
with the old value was only around 2400, which I thought was way too low.

Now that I changed the value to 55, my calorie burn for 100 miles runs
between around 3300 and 3600, which I think might be a tad more realistic.

Now for the good news....did my first ever 2 centuries in 2 days, and just
finished my third century in 5 days! Average speeds were just under 18,
just over 18, and I think today's was around 17.5. COOL! I have another
one to do this Saturday, so that will be 4 in 8 days.

Cat who is happy with high mile weeks!

kinds of miles in...where are these centuries? Are they organized or just
    rides of 100 miles?

Nope, I am an old lady (42). I am an attorney turned personal trainer and I
work 5 am-1 pm, so I can ride a lot. The first century started out with our
regular Saturday group ride, which is a slam fest from the first 1/10th
mile. It's basically 4 of our local racing teams. At the turnaround (mile
30 or so) another guy and I went out farther to Doylestown. We then went
back to Philadelphia. I left my guy and finished up with a lap around the
Schuylkill River then home. On Sunday, a group of about 12 of us went from
Philadelphia to New Hope and back. It was a very controlled ride, and I
pulled a lot of the way home. Today, I picked up one other guy and pulled
him to Doylestown and back to his house, (50 miles) and then went down to
the river and did 4 laps before heading home, so essentially, I pulled this
    one the whole way!

25 year olds don't have the stamina for lots of long rides like that.
Just look at the average age of any organized Century ride anywhere.

That sounds much more realistic, and it matches up closely with my

I sure hope those are mostly flat miles, otherwise I'll be

feet. For flat centuries -- I don't do flat centuries.

Sorry, not really flat, but mostly rolling. Flat around the river, though,
if that's any consolation. I find that the more I ride, the better I ride
anyway. I'm not too sure my personality fits in the West Coast, either ;>

Of course they can and do train, however it takes a long time to build. The
body also does not start producing an excess of this kind of muscle fibre
until a more ripe age. Damiano Cunego is considered exceptionlly young to
win a grand Tour like this. Winning a grand Tour takes a lot of other
qualitys than endurance as compared to a century ride that is nothing but an
endurance ride. Ie no race component involved.
If you ever go to an organized century you'll probably see more 50 year olds
than 20 year olds. At least here in Sweden and I'd be really surprised if it
wasn't the same all over the world.
As for the muscle fibres I mentioned you can google for slowtwitch and
fasttwitch. I'm not certain I spelled fasttwitch right.

Really? I've done a good bit or reading on muscle fibers and I've never
read this. Does one really need an excess of ST fiber to do endurance
    sports?

It helps. Look at the ages of the top performers in the high-endurance=20
sports (marathons and longer). They are usually 25 or so, into their=20
early 30's. While the top performers in the sprint events tend to be=20
    younger. =20

Of course, another part of the reason is that in the endurance events=20
you need to know your body a lot better, and how to adjust your pace to=20
meet the conditions; that can only be learned through experience.

It is correct; however, much of training, and much of doing a long
ride with insufficient training, is mental. Older folks have got a
big advantage over young whippersnappers like me, as they've got the
life experience to know how do deal with pain and fatigue, and to
know how to better pace themselves, and to know how to listen to
    their bodies.

Watch any 25 year old compete with his dad in doing some heavy work.
