I have both Microsoft Streets & Trips and Delorme Topo version 5. The advantage of Delorme's topo software is that you get the topographical profile. Version 5 was a little out of date as to recent road construction and the user interface left a bit to be desired, but it's really nice to have the profile view. They have a new version, 6.0, but I have not upgraded yet. There may be an online equivalent, but I don't know the link. Try a search on "topographical software" in google. In the future, GPS tracking files created by other cyclists will be the way to go, and there are many ride files at MotionBased.com, but there are no common ride file naming conventions so it's a mess to try and find the ride you're looking for. Once you do find it, it's amazing what you can do with multiple overlays and views, profiles, and the like.

I don't know if this site helps. It is quite good but you have to "pencil the route on the map then it will give you the data.

Beware of Google Earth.
We use it a few weeks ago and got lost.
Road names, mountains, etc named incorrectly.
