  1. I have had some time off so just restarted my PMC a number of weeks ago. I was coming off an illness and a crash, so I did mostly trail running and a few 3-5 hour rides. I went up from the default CTL of 50 to about 62 in 10 days.

This past Saturday I rode in a double century that turned tragic (we stopped to aid a rider who collapsed), so I did not get past that point (mile 130 with about 12.5K feet of climbing).

I am unsure of my fitness for the next double in two weeks since I didn't really get to test myself through the entire distance. I think my speed was ok through the first 6 hours or so. I did start to cramp a bit and had to back off after that, so I am thinking some threshold work today/Thursday with at least one long weekend ride, and some tune-up rides next week. Goal is to be close to TSB neutral but get the CTL up a number of points. Thoughts?

  2. At lower CTLs, I think you can afford to be a bit more negative TSB wise as the CTL is more important.

    Good luck.

Early January my CTL was in the 90's but then I took 2 months off the bike and it plummeted to about 20. Now after about 6 weeks of training I am back up to 60. Question: Was I right to leave the CTL as it was... or..., after the 2 months off the bike, should I have set the CTL at 50? Why the default at 50? 😕

    Thanks.

You were right to leave it as it was.

Not sure where people are getting the "50" from. I think 50 is probably a reasonable place to start if you've been training but haven't been logging your TSS so need somewhere to start. If you're untrained then you should start at 0.

Ah, okay, that makes sense. Thanks.

    Sounds right.

I have a ride Saturday but am jonesing for a 2-3 hour tempo climbfest tomorrow/Thursday.

I am calculating that would have me at an ATL of 95/CTL of 70 on Friday, with a TSB of -25 starting out on Saturday. While I would like to do decently, the double is itself an exercise in CTL building for late June, so it might be worth the risk.
