I was adjusting the gears and found the adjusting barrel a bit tight so me being me I went at it with pliers. The inevitable happened, I broke the barrel adjuster in half leaving the threaded part in the mech.

Put a very small bolt through it (if you can find one that will fit), tighten it up, put a locknut on it, then unscrew the lot. Or, from the 'wrong side', put a drill bit that's just a bit too big for the hole in the barrel into it and drive it slowly. The drill will jam (as they always do) and the barrel will then screw out.

Lubricate first with something that'll penetrate - Plusgas, WD40, GT85, that kind of thing. The loosening effect of this on the threads is likely to outweigh the extra slippage of the selected tool

The thing has been soaked in WD40. I did manage to wedge a small allen key in the hole and got half a turn before it lost grip. I've given up for the night, I'll give Simons suggestion a go in the morning followed by yours.

I've given up trying. The metal in the hole just wont budge and every attempt to move it wears more of it away. As it turns out it doesn't matter any way. In my attempt to get the mech back to its original look I forgot that the bike didn't need the adjusting barrel.
The bike is an 18 year old rockhopper with a 6 speed SIS shifter but now fitted with an 8 speed cassette I use the lever in friction mode.
I don't know. Am I thick or what?
