Actually three of my four bikes have dark anodised rims. It's a case of
what's available, plus the old polished MA2s weren't exactly immune from
cracking at the eyelets either. I've never had any problems.

before shipping.

Maybe nickel or ceramic; both have been used by others on chainrings.

I believe that this "EPS" treatment is PTFE, or Teflon, as we know
it. Does anyone think this will prolong the life of either the chain
or chainrings?

wear resistant platings are nothing new. and very effective. go to a
hardware store & look at the drill bits. see all the pretty gold
titanium nitride coated ones? some aviation engines have chrome plated
cylinder bores for wear resistance. suspension stansions for mountain
bikes are hard anodized. and getting back to bike chain rings, dura-ace
are nickel plated for wear resistance. don't know what your campy rings
are treated with, but there's absolutely no reason why it should be
bogus or ineffective.
