  1. So I've been trying to find the right saddle for me for what seems like forever. My current saddle is a SMP Lite 209. I really like the design with the cut out center, it helps my junk not get pinched off. However, My sit bones really ache after about 10 miles. It feels like the seat may be too hard but most people it really doesn't matter how hard the seat is if it's the right size. What should I try? Should I try lower it? Moving it forward slightly? Try another saddle? I've done around 300 miles with this saddle and it doesn't seem to be getting much better, especially if I ride back to back days. Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

  2. My sit bones ache a little if I've had a period of no cycling but my rear soon gets used to it, so I'd say your saddle isn't comfortable. I used to have gel saddle but it was a little too wide and made me sore on longer runs, I switched to an slimmer Selle Italia Flite Gel Flow saddle which also has the centre cut out and its very comfy. Brooks leather saddles is another option.

A good saddle isn't something I'm prepared to compromise on, I think the fit of the saddle is the most important component that contributes to the enjoyment of the ride.

  3. So you'd say go for a new saddle?

  4. Yes...if you're sure your riding position is right, then if the saddle is still uncomfortable then get a new saddle. Best go to your LBS and see if you can sit on some bikes with different saddles to get a feel for them. Finding a comfortable saddle on a long ride is a bit of a lottery but I learned that like a new pair of shoes, it its uncomfortable to start with, its only going to get more uncomfortable with time.

do you have too much of your weight supported on your butt? (too upright position?)
try lowering a few mm. Are your shorts equipped with the right padding? (on the right spots?) Confirm you have the correct riding position for you...
IMHO, soft saddles are not good, you need a firm surface with just enough "give"
I am very high on RIDO; try the sport model

  6. Find a shop that ill let you test saddles on your bike on short rides, or get a brooks saddle, (the leather will form to your shape), some shops, as many Trek dealers, have a tool you sit on that measures your hip width to narrow down saddle sizes/widths to try, be sure to try both "flat" and "round" profiles,(side to side). If your are not using "chamois shorts" get some, that alone can solve your problem. Check your fit adjustments, (Best done by someone else preferabely an experienced expert), as incorrect saddle height/angle adjustmnts greatly affect "fit/comfort" and are the root cause for "pinched junk", not the saddle(s).
