Please explain cassette config???

they're the number of teeth on each cog on the back wheel. Smaller cogs mean harder/bigger gears.

A 10 speed (10 cog) 11/23 cassette will most likely have these cogs:
11,12,13,14,15,16,17,19,21,23

so, the other cassettes have easier gears. By the way, in my opnion, there's a huge difference between a 13 and an 11, and anything over 23 is a pretty easy gear.

I assume you're choosing a new bike or new cassette?

My take on this question:
11-23, flat roads, low cadence road riding
12-25, standard , all purpose cassette
13-29, hills, slow riding, MTBs, trekking bikes.
13-26, high cadence road riding with occasional hills.

But, this is only half the question.
Chainrings, double or triple?
Compact or regular?

We realy need more information.

I am looking at buying a campag chorus groupset.
Compact carbon crank 39-48
Standard carbon crank 39-53
are both the options plus the cassette opitions as mentioned earlier.I've been riding for only about five years (manly MTB's) so have had much to do with road bikes.I do between 100-200km averaging 30km average on my road bike during a one week period, incorparating hills etc.I'm trying to build a bike at the moment so any info on this would be great.Thanks for your time.

I'd go for the 12/23 or 12/25 and the 39/53

i bought an 11-34 7speed for my mtn bike works good
seems to me the bike manufacturers want us to think more rings with less range is a good thing. the 11 gives me the same gear inches as my wifes flatbar roadbike and the 34 means i can catwalk it really easy. of course catwalking is not really that important is it?
my question is when i replace the crankset rings i want to get the biggest range that i can with out being too far out there. what are my options?

39-48 isn´t compact
36-50 or 34-48 is compact ( sometimes called GRAN FONDO )

like the " manly MTB " thing though . 😎

52-13 on a roadbike = 46-11 on a mtb
39-29 ´----------- = 24-17 on a mtb ( more or less )

if your strong 39 - 29 ( 28 if shimano , I know they say 27 but the 28 works fine - take a 13-25 : that´s 13-14-15-16-17-19-21-23-25 for a 9 speed : and replace the 23 and 25 with a 24 and a 28 # note this only works on none spider groups ie 105 )
