protector at all? Why not just get a UPS? Doesn't it work the same?

Thanks, Dee and DH ... I pay $4.36 a month for it. Well worth
it in my opinion compared to how much I had to spend to replace
a bunch of VCRs, etc when lightning hit a transformer/whatever a
number of years back. Just wondered if I should just buy one, I
figured the installation would cost a long times worth of renting it.
Heh, bet if I just discontinued the service they wouldn't actually send
someone out to disconnect it.

This thread sprang from another discussion where I mentioned
whole house surge protectors and UPSes. No, they are not the
same thing at all. A good UPS will include surge protection,
but a surge protector is not a UPS. A basic surge protector
will shunt over-voltage on a line to ground. A UPS will
maintain voltage even during a power failure, at least 'til
the battery runs out. I hope that makes sense.

I don't know of a UPS that's installed at the breaker box. IINM, this
surge protector works for all household appliances.

Probably run you under $300 to buy and have one installed. But since your
renting if it fails you have recourse. If you install your own and it
fails...no recourse. I'd go with the cheap insurance policy over
installing youe own.

Surge protectors are *rented* for home use? That must be a lot better
than what you'd buy to put in at the circuit box? If so... Oh, man!

UPS? Don't they deliver packages?

Thanks for the info, that's what I did, I had the utility company
install it. Learned my lesson about not having it, the expensive
way. At any rate, it wouldn't occur to me to install it myself, I
would most assuredly have an electrician do it.

UPS...Uninterrupted Power Supply.

Very good for black outs.

Surge protectors...good for electrical spikes/surges on your electric
service.

no help in a black out...but excellent for protecting electronics.

experienced design engineer and installer. It just ain't as easy as it seems.

As a simple overview, these devices need a very good grounding system that requires some pretty
expensive and exotic equipment to measure. The important thing is that, without a good ground, a
surge or lightning protector (they're different critters) can be more dangerous than no protection
at all!

Please. . . let your utility company do it. This is not a job for amateurs!
