Wow! What, in simple words that a non-photographer can
understand, did you do to it? I've recently acquired PSP8. Some
of the things it can do (OK, *most* of what it can do) are way
beyond my ken, because they - and the help files - use words
which are probably familiar to photographer types, but they're a
foreign language to me.

I did comparatively little to it, but had to work with the bird
separate from the rest of the image because when I jiggled and got a
decent looking bird the rest of the photo was 'orrible ;-)

1. The main thing I tried to do with the background was improve the
contrast and the colour. PS (sorry, I don't know my way around PSP)
has a function called "Shadow / Highlight" which I used to get a
background I was happy with.

2. Next step was to sharpen the image, but this is the stage that made
things go 'orrible so I had to back-track and fiddle a little bit
more.

Basically I noticed that I had to work with the background and the
bird separately.

3. There's a tool called "Magic Wand" which lets you select areas of
the same colour, when you use it and click you get "marching ants"
around the area you have selected. If it doesn't select everything you
want, i.e. all of the bird, then hold the shift-key down and click on
a bit its missed out and the new area(s) will be added.

I used this to select the bird and then right-clicked inside the
marching ants and chose "Layer via Copy". This gives you the "bird" to
work on separately in its own layer (a "layer" is just like another
picture lying on top of the first one, part of the layer has no
content which means its transparent and you can see through to the
picture underneath. Where the layer has content, i.e. the bird in this
instance, it covers the gubbins underneath.)

All of this means that I could jiggle with the bird and background
separately; adjusting shadows/highlights, colours and sharpness for
each part until I was happy (little tweaks is all it needed).

4. Then I selected "Merge Layers" from the main menu which turned the
two "pictures" I was working with back into one and that was pretty
much it. I did use one of the drawing tools to smudge little bits of
the bird's outline because it looked a little bit jaggy when I'd
finished, but that was all it needed.

It sounds complicated but prolly took longer to write out than
actually dfo ;-)
