Fine idea and one I'm sure has been suggested in the past. Even as a
photographer I find some of the photographic discussion boring at times, but
the problem is the threads that start on-topic and drift into photography or
something else somewhere along the way, instead of new threads being
started.

Having said that I just posted to a thread entitled "Cameras Again", so I do
think people are trying.

I posted a photo topic the other week and put PHOTO. It's even more
obvious what that is about, no chance of confusion with Public House.
Although I'm in the photography group I can see that not everybody is
happy to discus ad infinitum the merits of f stops, Photoshop, Nikon
vs Canon sensors et al, and would happily comply if it became the
norm.

Perhaps we should have a GEAR section too, so we can tell Martin to
filter all those threads relating to buying stuff.

But surely in a very busy newsgroup, there are a lot of topics discussed
that don't interest everybody, and if I find one, I just mark it as read and
move onto the next one. Perhaps it would be a good idea if everyone could
include the general subject matter in the title of their new topics, then we
could all make an informed choice on whether to read it or not - oh, hang
on... they do already!

It is often remarked about the frequency of Photography threads drifted
or otherwise and in similar vein GPS threads.

The membership of the NG is not static and as far as GPS is concerned
new users frequently need to ask questions which may be boring to the
"experts". We have to put up with these threads so perhaps "Novice GPS
"could be included in the title -- or something like that.

Indeed, but the problem is training the machine to do all that work for
you.
That's the purpose of the convention.

The simplest solution is to encourage people who regularly read this
newsgroup to use newsreaders that support proper threading and
filtering. That way you can simply ignore all those threads you don't
want to follow.

Cant say i'm much interested either, although I tend to rely on
what gets said here to keep me up to date, such things get
discussed a lot on photography groups, (cameras). The chat here
is sometimes of landscape photography, which I do find
interesting.

Ok, great idea!

Just to be clear though, what prefix do the conventions state that I should
I use if I wish to discuss, say, porridge? I need to be clear on this to
avoid any newsgroup faux-pas-ery.
