I've never ridden the Narrows rides so I have no idea how fast they are.
Give the contact numbers a call, that way you can get an idea how fast
they go. Plus, you'll at least know someone when you arrive.

Seems I now have some alternatives to my tuesday morning around the river, and whatever else is on offer with the CTA.

me:

all black Al + CF Cytek Massimo (even the white bits are black - apologies to Eric Olthwaite and Ripping Yarns)

OR

for commuting, a slicked up Blue and Orange Scorpion XT MTB with carbon bars and carbon bar ends

OR

if its raining, old silver steel tourer with black bar wrap and silver full mudguards (brand new polycarbonate ones I just fitted tonight - they look the duck's guts on the old bike)

....finally on top of each bike will be a bloke built like an ex-rugby player wearing glasses of some description :p

Im really lucky, the bike rides really well, and fits really well, for a bitser. Ive since done two centuries and two 56km river loops, and each time gotten off the bike feeling pretty decent. Seems to handle ok at speed, got to 76.5km down the hill in karnet =)

The velocity aerohead-based wheelset really takes the sting out of buying campy-compat. They were a smidge under both $400 and 1800g and are reputedly quite robust.

Hi Till,
Barrack st goes on tuesday and thursday at 6am as you now know. I do it mostly in winter as i live nearby and it means i dont have to ride to freo for my preferred papas ride. Tuesday is generally the day with less riders, and therefore, you need to do a bit more work. On Thursday the group is bigger and you can cruise along in the group quite easily. That said, it is a short group ride (lasting only about 70 minutes) so the pace will be on in sections and there are a few short, sharp hills (majestic in applecross and that hill of canning hwy in east freo spring to mind) that can break it apart. Especially if GP (gavin Parsonage) is on the ride. He won the Melbourne - Warnambool about 10 years ago and after a bit of a layoff he has decided to get back on the bike......and proceeds to smash it up on this group ride!!
that said, thursday is easier. Dont forget your lights though......most of the ride in winter will be done in the dark.
Saturday barrack st (6:30 belltower) is a smashfest. race conditions on a group ride, which is crazy to me, so i dont do it.
I do prefer papas from freo, mainly cause i know more people on it and it gets more k's in. It is also a more relaxed (!) introduction to mass group rides. If you are interested it starts at Gino's cafe, on south tce, at 6:30 on saturdays and sundays and passes canning bridge at around 7:00 if you are a bit late or want a sleep in. Come down and i will look after ya!! 😉
I ride a older c-40 with centaur. Im tall with curly hair, hard to miss.

slow group leaves 10 or so minutes later i think.

Hmm, I usually have people over on wednesdays, so that bites somewhat about thurs. Ill have to program some shorter films and make it sometime =)

I was up a bit late friday nite to ride anywhere on sat, so I thought Id see what was up for grabs on Sunday, and saw that ride from capt stirling. Anyway, as I was nearing the cap s i saw a bunch going past, down the hwy, into town so I figured that was it.

The pace was ok up to some place SOR, and from there is picked up. I ended up at the front of the paceline, somewhere over 40km/h and that really hurt. I think Ill read the blurb a bit more carefully next time, stick to slower rides and have one less piece of toast in the morning, least for awhile.

nah, you will be right, you just need to sit in and not go to the front. Best to roll around a couple of times and then you learn when it is on and when it isnt so you dont blow. Generally, when a group goes through shelley, along riverside drive, along MBR and along leighton, it is always on.
oh, also have toast with vegemite, it wont make you feel like throwing up so much 😉.

Close, but no cigar this morning. I was hanging around at canning highway, at 7am, and saw a bunch coming thru. I hopped on, and later found out it was bikeforce freo. Love the cold towel at the end =)

geez, that noise was after it was fixed!. Such is the character of a campy freewheel. Not that it is really fixed, more a bodged temporary job. I had been waiting for a freewheel from the campag distributors in sydney for over a week and then they sent the wrong one. I would understand getting monkey business service if i was paying peanuts but campy stuff aint cheap, so they are really taking the [censored].
anyhow, a bit of araldite on the cracks in the rim and we are back in business for a couple of weeks 😉

Hah, I was warned to wear elbow pads for the old papas ride :P

Ill have to try and drag my sorry ass down to freo by 6:30 after missing them at canning bridge on the weekend.
