I think that by saying that diets with extremes have the most dropouts, Mark
is agreeing with you.
While it's the perseverance that is ultimately important, the type of diet
is important in achieving the perseverance. So both statements are true but
incomplete. It's important to pick a diet that you can stick with, but which
diet (among the ones studied) is not very important IF you know it's one you
can stick with.
The next step is to figure out which diets are easiest to stick with when
looking at a bigger group of diets. Something like South Beach was designed
because patients had a hard time staying on Ornish in the long run, even
though the author found that diet medically sound.
