They could have gone home on the bus.)

They're only students. Don't worry about them, they breed worse than
rabbits.

worse they are to walk to a police station, collect the mangled metal
& carry it away :

"All the damaged bikes were taken to Fratton Police Station where the
owners can go to claim them."

but I'm not sure about the headline :

"Lorry careers out of control in city centre"
surely it's the driving jobs that are out of control & not the careers

It seems that Tom Crispin of indeterminate age thinks traffic is
motorists, not a thought for the cyclists who were caught up in the
"chaos".

A bit of chaos would be fun occasionally; it's never quite that bad.
In fact it's almost always confined to two-plus-epsilon dimensions,
which makes it very ordered indeed.

Tom Crispin doesn't believe that Lucy Haley (50) had cyclists in mind
when she expressed sympathy for those caught in traffic. He considers
one of the joys of cycling to be the ability to avoid traffic chaos,
even if that requires a short dismount and push around the obstruction
while fuming motorists look enviously on.

Tom Crispin is sounding very much like a Harry Potter house elf.

Which just goes to say that we cyclists do not need her (allegedly)
unproffered sympathy. So why worry about it?

I certainly had fun during the fuel protect, whilst everyone else was
fretting about running out of petrol.

Surely the cyclists would avoid the traffic chaos if the cyclists were on
cycle paths?

You omitted an "ab".

No I didn't - they are nearly all cycle lanes too so use is the correct
word.

But the fuel crisis affects cyclists too!
I was worried about how the lorrys would get the jaffa cakes to the
supermarket.

By rail as freight should be carried.
