I thought the chief point of requiring mudguards on some audaxes was to keep /other/ /riders/ relatively clean and dry. That being the case, mudguards which didn't do that well should clearly not be approved.
Nah. If someone dislikes being sprayed with muck (I personally don't mind -- it's all part of the fun[1]), he shouldn't be riding so close behind. IME, even full length mudguards don't trap most of the flying crud anyhow; they just keep it off the rider and his bike. Guards with rear flaps are the way to go if you want to keep crud off your fellow riders.
The reason for the muguard stipulation is so they don't have mucky riders all over the furniture in the controls.
Like others, I've been on a summer audaxes without mudguards where they've been stiplulated. If it happens to rain, I keep out of groups of riders I don't know (some of whom might object) and stay standing at the controls.

that's interesting; are there still that many? can't say I notice much as tend to read the mudguard rule after entering and choose the bike accordingly, plus of course the weather on the day.

West Bay and Back was the last 'M' I did. There was absolutely no chance of rain that day, so I didn't bother with the Raceblades. The D*rs*t C**st is another. My bother rode the latter with me this year, he's new to Audaxing and looked at me aghast when I told him about the mduguard rule (he didn't have any fitted and feared the Spanish Inquisition).
