  1. Heya folks,

I will be going to Penzeys tomorrow on my way through Memphis. Gonna
buy out the store, I think. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I need some saffron. I know that Penzeys saffron has been talked about
here, but I cannot remember which one was recommended as being really
    top notch.

    Anyone remember?

They're all good but the mogra is the best... buy a gram of each and
try them to find your favorite. I suggest you don't buy more than you
    anticipate using in a year.

And remember, saffron may be the most expensive spice to buy but it's
not the most expensive to use... a little goes a long way. And after
a point you're only wasting it, adding more will not increase the
saffron flavor, that will only make the dish bitter. With saffron
    less is more.

I hope it's not too late Christine. Penzey's prices are too high. We shop at
the Spanish Table in Berkeley where slightly over 1/3 oz. of Spanish Saffron
is $36. I'm pretty certain it's the same Saffron I bought in Spain years
ago. As I said below, it freezes well. We recommend the Spanish Table for
its quality and service. I would't hesitate to buy mail order from them.

If you're going to get some, get the Kashmir Mogra Cream.

But honestly, I think the $29/ounce Spanish stuff that
Costco is selling is pretty decent, and if you use a little
more you get the value that you'd be getting by using the
    Mogra cream.

Barring that, Trader Joe's sells a jarred version that
isn't nearly as cheap, but is about identical in quality
    to the Costco stuff.

But, if you've never had the Mogra Cream, get a jar.
The website says the 1-gram jar is $12.95. It's worth
it to try it out to have the empirical evidence. And it
really is just a tiny bit smoother, in addition to being
    more powerful.

Let's hope. I use a lot, and that means about a gram or
three per year, and I just bought 30 grams at Costco...

First thing I did was put it in a ziploc and put that into
another ziploc and put that in my herb bag in the freezer.

Penzey's prices are too high for Spanish saffron, but
they're the only place I know to get the top-quality
Kashmiri saffron at all. So that's what Penzey's is
    for, in this case.

Too late. I stopped at Penzeys today, and bought out the store. Got
two kinds of saffron, the Indian one, and a Spanish one. This calls
for making paella again, to try them out.

I have a Spanish Table an hour away from me, in Santa Fe. I might
take a jaunt up there and get some other spanish ingredients....

I got the jar that didn't cost upwards of $60some $$$. I wanted to
get the bigger jar, but couldn't bring myself to buy it. And I got
    the Spanish stuff too...to compare.

But .....I bought a lot of other stuff. I had a whopping bill....I
got a bunch of things that everyone has recommended.... My shopping
    filled two bags.. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Might make a paella for the NM Cook-in....

    How's the paella?

You'll probably see the difference. But it will be slight.
And the Spanish stuff is near identical to what Costco is
    selling for $1/gram in a 1-ounce (28-gram) jar. Lifetime
    supply.

I don't know. I need to straighten out things at work
and then I can start scheduling vacations.

Christine, the Spanish Table in the Socialist Republic of Berkeley
periodically does a huge batch of Paella and serves it to starving patrons.
Maybe they do that in Santa Fe.

  14. In the 60's when I was a teenager, I used to smoke saffron for a high.
It wasn't real strong, but it did the trick. This makes me wonder
what drug is in it, and how this affects people that eat it.

    $$$$Money

I can't imagine you could afford to smoke pure saffron as a teenager
in the sixties, not even now as a lyoing adult.
