  1. I just received an unsolicited copy of the new Penzeys One magazine.
I've seen it advertised in their catalog, but wasn't especially
intrigued. After perusing the charter copy, "wow" is an understated
(and not especially articulate) description! There are virtually no
ads, other than those for Penzeys (natch) and also for charitable
organizations like Unicef and the American Cancer Society. The
recipes are very homey (or is that homely in the true sense of the
word?) without being "Taste of Home"-ish (I find those often to be
Sandra Lee-style recipes). It is a beautiful magazine, and
interesting in that it features some lovely thought-provoking
articles about the lives of real, everyday folks like you and me (i.e.
not Bobby Flay, etc) and their cooking. The editors said
(paraphrased) that they are trying to create a magazine that they can
be proud of from "day one", and in the spirit of "if we build it they
will come." Some of the recipes use Penzeys products, but not all,
perhaps not even the majority. There is some obvious product
placement in some of the photos, for things like Land o Lakes butter,
Quaker Oats, Hershey's M&Ms, etc, but that's pretty much it in terms
    of advertising.

I'm impressed! And will be buying a subscription. That's probably a
gamble, hard to say if the mag is going to fly, but I appreciate their
philosophy (or what I infer to be their philosophy from their product)
and I like what I see. And of equal importance, I'll actually use
    these recipes!

Anyone else get a free copy? Thoughts?

I received mine the other day as well. I echo your thoughts about the
magazine. I was pleasantly surprised with its content. Haven't decided
yet if I'm going to actually purchase a subscription (I already have too
many magazines right now), but I'm definitely leaning that way.

I got a free copy, but haven't read it carefully yet. I must admit to
being a little prejudiced against it because the recipes in the Penzey's
catalog rarely appeal to me. But after reading your enthusiastic
review, I will give it a more thorough look.

  7. My dad said he got one in the mail yesterday and he and my mom have
marked several recipes to try. I didn't get one, though my Dad read in
the magazine that it's being sent to those who receive catalogs. A copy
may be in the mail for me.

I just made an order with Penzey's. They'd better include that magazine in

I got mine a couple of days ago, but didn't take the time to
read it, I just flipped through it. I'll definitely give it a closer

If they don't, you can have mine. I wasn't impressed. The format is
not that great and the recipes in their catalog are as good or better,
IMO. At $3.00+ per copy, I'll pass. There are too many other places
    to get good recipes...free...like rfc🙂🙂🙂

Similar to the ones in their catalogs? I've not been to happy with
the finished product of the recipes I've tried (cakes and main
courses), so if they are kin, then I guess I don't need it either.

I agree. I got mine the other day and flipped through it and thought it
was just the same Penzey's recipes (which I do love usually) in magazine
format. None of the stories sparked my interest in the people, but I
admit I haven't sat down to read them...yet?

    Goomba

I've only read three of the stories so far, and I enjoyed all of them.
The one about the family who adopted 4 children from different
countries, the piece on Birmingham, Alabama, and the one about the
"older" (hey, a lot older than I anyway!) woman. I thought the poem
she wrote was lovely, about the rocking chair. There was also a
picture that really sparked my interest, and obviously this wouldn't
apply to everyone -- her husband was wearing a plank hat from the USS
Enterprise, and the caption read that he'd like to hear from others
who were on that ship. My uncle probably served with this guy, so I'm
going to write to him (my uncle passed away, but I have his hat.)

I also thought the recipe for gingered tuna salad sounded great, never
would've thought to do that. It does call for crystalized ginger
which Penzeys sells but it doesn't specify the Penzeys product. Some
of the recipes DO specify Penzeys products which I think is acceptable
since it's Bill Penzeys magazine :-)

Anyway. Chacun a son gout, or as we say in Usenet, YMMV :-)

It is very meaningful indeed. When I saw the picture of the guy in

back to the mag. There was a picture of the fellow when he served,

He'll no doubt get a kick out of the hat picture. An uncle can be sooo
special, my brother's served under conditions that must've been hell. When
I got him to tell me anything about it, he only mentioned places he'd been
and didn't complain. I really loved him a lot. He died almost a year ago.
Your writing to this guy is another way of honoring your uncle.

I hear ya. My uncle was cool. I remember when he first shipped off
to Ireland. He promised he'd bring me a pot of gold, if he could
wrench it away from the leprechaun. He came back with an Irish bride
instead. I love my auntie, but even as a 6-year old, I wanted that
pot of gold!!!! He also used to talk to "the little people", he'd
gather all of us kids around and tell us to look for the little people
in the grass. He entertained us for hours and hours. Ohhhh what a
lovely guy he was. I envision him and my Dad playing cribbage
    endlessly in the hereafter :-)

TammyM, got the hat right here (must keep it away from the cats and
    dogs!!!)

Funny coincidence like that happened to me recently. My father was on
life support while we got the family together. My niece is an intern for
the Armed Services Committee of Congress. She often has to visit
submarines and ships on fact finding missions, and part of the public
relations by the ship is providing the visitors with their caps
(scrambled eggs on the bill, their last name embroidered on the back).
She recently visited the USS Abe Lincoln and brought my dad her cap.
She placed it next to his head on the hospital pillow. When the priest
came to give last rites, he stopped in his tracks and asked if my
father had served on that ship? He apparently was the Chaplain on it for
    2 years.
